Effective leadership is predominantly an innate quality, constituting about 80% of one's leadership capabilities, while the remaining 20% can be cultivated through training. Exceptional leaders possess an inherent talent, which they refine through dedicated practice. I respectfully advise business owners, CEOs, GMs, and others against promoting individuals lacking this innate leadership aptitude to top positions, as it risks exhausting valuable team members. Instead, I encourage them to identify Natural Leaders within their organization horizontally and invest in nurturing their existing leadership talents. By doing so, they can build formidable teams guided by authentic leaders, fostering heightened employee loyalty and overall success.

In sport, there’s a strong link between physical touch and team success. The teams who touch more, win more. Carlo Ancelotti used to touch me every morning at the start of a meeting. It made me feel loved and created a sense of belonging. He’s the most skilled people person I’ve ever worked with. He knows the importance of touch. If this rule exists in sport then I can only imagine it must be applicable in every type of team. It gets more complicated in environments that are less embodied in nature. But there must be a correlation between touch and team success in all organisations? What’s your experience of the power of touch at work? 🌟 Exciting Milestone: First Competitive Netball Tournament with My Daughter Last weekend, I had the privilege of playing in my first netball tournament with my 12-year-old daughter on the same team. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’m beyond proud of her making her mark as the youngest player in the tournament and holding her own against some very experienced players. Playing side by side, I was reminded of the immense value of providing opportunities for growth and development, not just in sports but in all areas of life. Witnessing my daughter’s determination, teamwork, and leadership skills in action was truly inspiring. These are the types moments that shape our future leaders. Here are a few reflections from our experience: 1. **Opportunity**: Giving our children and likewise aspiring leaders the chance to participate in diverse activities allows them to discover their passions and strengths. 2. **Development**: Through teamwork and competition, we nurture critical skills such as communication, resilience, and strategic thinking. 3. **Cultivating Leadership**: By leading by example and giving encouragement, we foster the next generation of leaders who are confident, empathetic, and capable. Super special memories created for us both. The URGENT need for the ‘first follower’ and the lone nut! There is a well-known 3 minute video clip which is known as the ‘ First Follower: Leadership lessons from dancing guy’ https://lnkd.in/guCX_Dk8  that I always use in the early weeks of my Leadership content for the many MBA Exec and MBA programs in Australia and abroad that I have delivered. It is grainy and poor quality but the funny message that the content sends is important and worthy of more serious consideration as we consider the importance of our actions and what true leadership involves.  The video identifies the importance of a ‘first follower’ and how it is the COURAGE of this person to stand out and be judged, to look ridiculous and NOT the ‘lone dancing nut’ who will decide the future course of the event. Yes, whilst it was the ‘lone nut’ who began the movement, he would have remained alone and unsupported had it not been for the ‘first follower’ who showed the courage to join him. It was the first follower who made all the difference. I wonder how many of us walk away from these ‘first follower’ moments in the hum drum of life. Do we hold onto our values of dignity and fairness during the small (and big) moments in our daily lives where we see a dancing guy being avoided or ridiculed?  I know I have failed many times when I don’t want to be judged or to ‘stand out’ or to be unpopular with my peers, or simply when I think I can’t afford the time to stop and engage. I want to challenge myself to do better here. It is in the small moments that leadership is enacted we all have that opportunity handed to us regularly, and it is where we build the muscle required to quietly gain confidence. Let us standby those who have called out for change, even if we are vulnerable and fearful of being judged. Steven Covey encourages us to find our ‘principle centre’. The principles that are at your core, that will hold you strong when your world falls away from beneath you. It is your rock that holds you steady as you walk into the arena to dare greatly.
