I have worked with a few start-ups, many MNCs and a miniscule number of Partnership Firms. One of my mentors always used to tell me "Kaustav, you join with a bang and you leave with grace". I have been a stringent follower of this statement since my early career in Delhi/NCR. And till date, I have a very cordial relationship with all my ex-bosses and colleagues, even if I worked with them some 20 years back. My question is, why do some of your ex-bosses and colleagues stop responding to you, when you are at distress and seek help? Even a small 10 words sentence, "Busy right now, will connect with you in a while/tomorrow" can do wonders, isn't it? When you are at distress, why do people tend to forget that tinge of good relationship that you shared with them since ages? Is that a new trend? Is that the new high? You may not be having any option to help, but can't you say a sentence that will at least console the person who maintained such a good relationship with you?

The leap that launched my career - I was young and freshly out of a tier one business school called Narsee Monjee with only the idea of landing a fancy sounding job like many others do at that age, i had heard friends get in at TCS etc so i got a job as an Analyst at Amex as my first job. Soon i realized it wasn't for me, but friends and family told me who gives up such an opportunity. Although there’s wonderful thing Corporate teaches you, polishes you , but i knew i wouldn't learn the way i wanted to. I didn’t want to be a small cog in a very big machine, so i conveyed to my manager I wanted to quit, she told me to think till the end of the day and then come back, I did go back with the same decision, she told me to think over the weekend, she didn't want me to go and was hoping I’d change my mind, I was 3 months in and i had some idea of the kind of learning and impact i wanted in my initial years. I joined a SaaS start up a month later and had the most challenging two years of my life, it was being thrown into deep waters from the day 1, from travelling over 10 days a month to markets and closing clients, to managing over 150 accounts, closing some of the largest clients in the industry and opening markets in regions our competitors couldn't due to the political situations, pricing to take up a larger portion of the nascent market, it was all too much for young clueless kid but oh so very rewarding. It was a wonderful opportunity at Amex and everyone thought i was crazy to give it up without knowing what awaits me on the other end but to have had the courage to say no to a paved path and walk my own has helped me learn so much and grow and learn at an incredible rate. I wonder if it was all possible only because i had the courage to take a leap of faith? I am starting to make it a monthly habit. What last leap of faith did you take? This year has been pretty amazing for me. Was it full of successes? Hell no! In fact, I had so many negative experiences that literally shook me to the core. But I learned a lot. This year I had so many varied experiences because I went for them without second-guessing. In January, I started doing a job in HR while still in college to get an experience in the HR department. 10 days in, I understood it was not for me! Then I landed upon an internship and was in direct contact with the founder. I always wanted to shadow CEOs and founders. It happened. And guess what? The founder lived near my location and we drove together to the office. I used to bombard him with questions related to entrepreneurship which he happily answered. Lucky me! A long-held dream come true! Then I met with a guy online and because our ambitions "aligned" we thought of starting a business together. All while attending college, I mean "pretending" to attend college, skipping classes and approaching giants like WowMomos, Keventers etc if we could make coupons for them. I was going through an emotional turmoil all this while and trying to "move out" especially in an Indian conservative family that too being a girl! Look at this rebellious girl!!!! This guy tried his best to separate me from my family and my core values. Seems like the guy mastered diplomacy & manipulation. Then had a great fight with him & consequently struggled with an "existential & identity crisis" which took me almost one month to recover. All this while, I was crying my eyes out so bad. Strong as I am, I laughed it off by trying my best to enjoy the farewell. Such a memorable day! Months passed. Went out of my comfort zone, and started attending so many startup & networking events. This was such a game-changer. Even attended several Toastmasters events. I was on cloud nine when it came to confidence. Doing everything that I once feared. Joined another startup. Gradually, I couldn't tolerate the toxic culture & decided to quit. The first half of this year has been full of bittersweet experiences & shaped me into the person I am today. While some of the experiences felt like hell, I'm grateful for them. For those of you who don't know, when someone is going through identity or existential crisis, it literally feels as if you are dying. It's a very weird and disastrous experience I wouldn't wish even on my worst enemy. I don't share this to solicit any sympathy or attention. It is temporary & is of no use. The years fly by, and we don't even realize how. I am overwhelmed with joy and extremely grateful and thankful to all those who reached out with birthday wishes. July is a special month for my family with multiple birthdays and also my wedding anniversary. What makes this year even more special is that I turned FOUR DECADES "YOUNG" + Ops Engine's 1 year anniversary. I was speaking with someone a few days ago who said, "You got lucky that your company has positive cash flow within a year." Before I [wanted to] strangle him, these are the things that went through my mind: ☑ 15-18 hour days, 6 days/week. ☑ Relentless pursuit of business/customer prospects. ☑ Networking like my life depends on it (it did, really!). ☑ Infusion of 23 years of operational excellence: capital, hardware, software, leadership, quality assurance, compliance and documentation, automated workflows, manual workflows, etc. ☑ Sacrificing an unbelievable amount of personal time and special moments with family. Yeah, I guess he's right. I got lucky! 😳 #OperationsManagement is not for the faint of heart. I started this business alone and am on track to have a thriving #fulfillmentcenter that gives a damn beyond the industry's pick, pack, and ship. Today, OpsEngine services customers from some of the best 3PLs in the industry, all of which said they were lacking: ✖ Communication ✖ Flexibility ✖ Dependability ✖ Solutions-based approach My goal in life was never to make "a lot" of money but rather to add value. I have done that my entire career—the continuous investment in myself, my values, education, experience, faith, and track record. The feeling of my children's warm wishes for my health, happiness, and business prosperity and my customers, friends, and colleagues reaching out tells me I've done it the right way. We all leave a trail in life, either good or bad. I hope the operational trail I leave behind carves the path forward for others. Operations management and leadership are my way of life, and I'm thankful to my family, friends, and God for leading me on this path over the course of my career. 🤝 Challenges are a dime a dozen in startups, but the relentless pursuit of success outworks and overcomes any challenge. When I first met Joe, he had a vision for ‘not feeling indifferent’ in his data science engineering career. He had some success with his past and current roles as a Ph.D. working at one of the biggest and most successful silicon valley tech companies… But it wasn’t sure he was on the right career track or if he should change it up and join a start up. At this big tech company was he just another data scientist who wasn’t caught up in overwhelm that is all too easy to fall into - permanently staying there? Along with a framework for him to think differently, he started carving out new thoughts, feelings and behavior that set him on a new career trajectory. Through this, Joe realized how he felt more often. This helped him gain clarity on what he wanted, and enabled him to make better decisions. He felt more authentic as he created new boundaries to be more in charge of his time. Today, things are so different and wow have things changed! ✨ Discovering My Path✨ As I look back on my journey, I realize that life often takes us on paths we never expected. Fresh out of graduation, I had no clear direction for my career, but life had other plans. With my father's passing, I needed to step up and support my mother, which led me to my first role as a Sourcer-Recruiter at Mastech Digital. My first role felt like a door opening to the professional world. I wasn’t ready, but I had to dive in. The journey was tough initially, and there were moments when I felt lost. However, over time, I learned about the recruitment cycle and the importance of delivering the right candidate to the business. Mohit Wali and Himanshu Dhar were great mentors and leaders who helped me grow as a professional, taught me the H1B process and the entire lifecycle of recruitment. Things were stable until the recession hit in the USA. I was working day in and day out without seeing results, and my health began to suffer greatly due to the night shifts. I started looking for new opportunities, and then came #Barclays —a turning point in my life. I made the bold decision to shift from recruitment to a customer-facing role. Though the first few months were grueling and tested my resilience, the 8 hours of nonstop, back-to-back calls, limited breaks, and constant pressure pushed me to my limits. I even considered resigning, but instead, I took some time off to focus on my well-being, where my senior leadership and manager supported me during these tough times. During this time my partner supported incredibly and will always be grateful to KKaranveer Premi. When I returned, I felt stronger and more determined than ever. This past year has been transformative. I’ve grown in ways I never imagined: 1. Communication Skills🗣️: Finding my voice and learning to articulate it confidently. 2. Confidence🚀: Overcoming hesitation and embracing public speaking. 3. Empathy🤝: Helping others and building meaningful relationships. 4.
