A few thoughts on the upcoming BLM meetings in Nevada on behalf of Tread Lightly!

Attention VFX Paint or Prep Artists or anyone doing clean up: This video explains the Golden Rule of VFX Paint: "JUST MATCH THE PLATE". If you need more detail, let's break this down into an Eleven-Category checklist: 01- The MOTION of your Paint Work should match the Plate. 02- The COLOR of your Paint Work should match the Plate. 03- The DETAIL of your Paint Work should match the Plate. 03a- This includes the hyper detail of close ups, 03b- the loss of detail for distant targets, 03c- sharp focus and defocused areas, 03d- any practical effects going over the paint like smoke, dust, etc. 03e- perspective of angles and textures of your paint should match the plate. 03f- the details of your paint work for large areas of reconstruction should match the plate, and the plates shot from similar angles within that shot's sequence. 04- The LIGHTING of your Paint Work should match the Plate. 04a- This includes matching the black levels 4b- and matching the white levels. 04c- If there is interactive lighting, match the plate's interactive lighting. 05- GRAIN of the Paint Work should match the plate. When checking your Paint, A/B the plate and paint (ideally on every frame) while reviewing each area for these five qualities of photorealism. Anything else I missed? UPDATE 04172024 (Thanks to Ananthakrishnan Subramanian and Balaji K for adding these other "Match the Plate for Final Pixel Approval"): 06- RESOLUTION of the Paint Work should match the plate. 07- BOUNDING BOX of the Paint Work should match the plate. 08- METADATA of the Paint Work should match the plate. 09- FILE FORMAT of the Paint Work should match the plate. 09a- For example, if its an EXR plate, you should output and EXR paint. 10- Any reconstructed MOTION BLUR in the Paint Work should match the nearest motion blur of the plate. 11- Only Change the Plate As Much As Needed 11a- Paint Artists should create and check the difference matte for any unnecessary areas of paint work. 11b- Restore the plate as much as possible if you have unnecessary painted areas.
