Surgery is still standard of care for many cancers.  The general trend has been to move to more conservative surgical approaches, which can reduce the risk of surgical complications as well as improve patient quality of life.  This study in the NEJM shows that simple hysterectomy was not inferior to radical hysterectomy in early-stage, low-risk cervical cancer.  The incidence of pelvic recurrence at 3 years was 2.17% in the radical hysterectomy group and 2.52% in the simple hysterectomy group, showing noninferiority. The inclusion criteria for this trial were fairly strict, so patient selection will be very important, but simple hysterectomy appears to be an effective and more patient friendly approach in early-stage, low-risk cervical cancer.  This also shows the importance of cervical cancer screening, which is generally how cervical cancer is caught in the earlier stages. #cervicalcancer #cervicalcancerawareness https://lnkd.in/ejVi7EVq

Bowel Cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK and the 2nd biggest cancer killer. Every year nearly 43,000 people are diagnosed and sadly more than 16,500 people die of it. However, it can be treatable and curable if diagnosed early. Surgery often remains the most effective treatment for bowel cancer. Today, the life expectancy and quality of life for many bowel cancer patients is greatly improved than what it was just 10 years ago. Eighty percent of cases can be successfully treated if diagnosed early, often by surgery. The quality of surgery and surgical skills are constantly evolving and Pelican, with associated surgeons, has been at the forefront of innovation in colorectal surgery and precision treatment.
