Thirteen years ago, I had the honour of addressing the inaugural cohort of INSEAD INSEAD Leadership Program for Senior Executives (ILPSE). Last week, with the 13th cohort in progress, I once again had the privilege to engage with a group of experienced senior executives, thanks to the invitation from Prof Paddy and Bala. This session was focused on sharing my leadership journey and challenging the fears that often hold leaders back from reaching their true potential. My goal for the participants was clear: to inspire them to believe in their ability to become courageous and purpose-driven leaders by confronting their fears and embracing freedom. Fears act as barriers to personal growth and development. To overcome them, it’s essential to push them aside and attain freedom—both physically and financially. Recognizing that beyond fear lies freedom, combined with a clear sense of purpose, can propel our life journey and grant us greater control over our destiny. Fear originates from the perception of threat or danger, triggering a "fight-or-flight" response. This reaction is designed for survival, preparing us to either confront or flee from the threat. While certain triggers are universal, we can learn to fear almost anything. Therefore, the origin of fear is thought. Our aim should be to manage, address, and conquer fear by connecting with our purpose and self-editing our thoughts. In the final part of my talk, I emphasized building purpose-driven leaders who can make meaningful contributions to their businesses and communities. Purpose, the "why" behind our existence, should be seen as bigger than our jobs—it's about what we do for others, not just ourselves. Our leadership purpose defines who we are and what makes us distinctive; it is our brand. I highly recommend reading "Deep Purpose" by Prof Ranjay Gulati for deeper insights. I shared my personal purpose as a business leader: to positively impact society by creating 10,000 jobs in my lifetime. Creating jobs, uplifts families and makes a positive impact on the community. Over my 30-year corporate career, I have created 6,041 jobs. Now, by mentoring senior healthcare leaders through Asia Mentors Circle, which I co-founded with like-minded industry friends, I am working towards creating the remaining 3,959 jobs needed to exceed my 10,000-job goal.

Sanjay Prabhakaran I attended 'Leading the Effective Sales Force (leadership program)' at INSEAD Singapore in 2009. I vividly recall the impact you had on me and my fellow course mates. So much so, I still remember the content and key messages from your presentation and often remind myself when I am stuck in a challenging situation. Thank you for inspiring so many leaders and its heartening to see your structured approach to further widen the impact. Paddy PADMANABHAN this (LESF) was perhaps one of the top three training programs of my career, Bob Davenport was another presenter who did a fantastic job and helped me immensely during and after the course. Hope you are keeping well and it's still going strong.
