💊 Having worked in biomedical R&D in one capacity or another for 20 years, I have been reflecting on how our understanding of the broader ecosystem has been changing over the years. 🔬 When I first started my research career, I had little to no interactions with the clinical interface. However over the years, I increasingly straddled across basic sciences, translational research and clinical trials and product development, with deep involvement in all elements of the R&D continuum. 🌍 Today, in my position at World Health Organization, we implement activities to optimize and support R&D at all levels, and to ensure the most efficient links between the interconnected elements of the R&D ecosystem, starting from the research workforce capacity. ➡ How is the new generation of research workforce trained in your country? Are the drivers PhDs? Or MScs and MPH? ➡ Can you achieve best practices in one element of the R&D ecosystem independently of others? Or are the elements all interconnected, and only as strong as the weakest link? ➡ How do countries determine their research priorities and funding allocation? Very important discussion. We have to get away from the unidimensional linear model. Other dimensions must be addresed concomitantly, eg: education, knowledge generation, legal / trade frameworks (IP), ethical, etc. These should intersect with the model presented.

Coming out of meetings with counterparts in MOH Malaysia who are engaged in different functions in the research innovation ecosystem today, could not resonate more with these questions. It is crucial for stakeholders to apply systems thinking, and develop the awareness of interconnectedness in different shapes of research, which may eventually lead to more symbiotic relationships among key players. #randd #healthresearch #ecosystem #implementationscience #clinicaltrials

Anna Laura, this is a really important conversation. In the work I lead supporting strengthening of the clinical research ecosystem, sustainable health impact occurs when countries and regions develop integrated capacities linking preclinical, clinical, regulatory, ethics, lab, data, manufacturing amongst others. For me the key is how countries and regions can confidently move ahead with the next priorities for investment in developing this integrated system towards improving access to accessible, quality, safe and effective interventions that are appropriate for their populations, and based on engagement with those populations in the clinical development process. So the clinical research only works for population benefit as one critical pillar of the whole. And going a step further the ecosystem needs to be able to assess resource efficient mixes of interventions that are suitable for different settings. In the SDG era, we are way beyond one size fits all solutions for global health problems.

I also chose a career in Clinical Research. Definitely is more than a job, it’s a way to give back and help others, and what really motivates me is to see the efficacy and safety results of clinical trial participants. #clinicalresearch #clinicalresearchcareers

The year has started at a cracking speed for the Moira Clay team, and working with the Australian Society for Medical Research to guide its strategic review has been very fulfilling. Reflecting on issues impacting the success and, importantly, happiness and fulfillment of Australian medical researchers has dominated our discussions. Researchers represent some of the brightest minds in our nation, keen to make a positive impact in their area of expertise. Yet so many face significant challenges because the sector is so highly competitive, underfunded, and lacking in job security. We've been pondering what would need to change, and what the outcomes would be if medical researchers did not face these crippling conditions. The clinical research profession is facing a critical workforce shortage, a challenge that is escalating. In a recent forum sponsored by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), thought leaders from various facets of clinical research converged to address the pressing issue. The forum, hosted by Partners Advancing the Clinical Research Workforce—an industry consortium established by ACRP—delved into the root causes of the shortage and strategies to transform barriers into bridges. Susan Landis, the Executive Director of ACRP, emphasised the urgent need for a diverse, research-ready workforce that the industry currently lacks. As the clinical research sector experiences unprecedented growth, the existing workforce struggles to keep pace, posing a significant threat to the timely delivery of innovative treatments to patients in need. As part of the collective effort to address this challenge, TASK Research Academy's "Foundations and Beyond: The Clinical Research Journey" is playing a crucial role. This prestigious award supports our upcoming project titled "Convening the Recovery Residence Stakeholder Community to Explore PCOR/CER Opportunities." Our goal? To bring together key stakeholders from the Recovery Residence community for a vital conference to explore and identify opportunities for Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) and Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER).
