What Happens When a College Dies? Birmingham-Southern College will soon be closing its doors for the last time, and as that day approaches, the college's alumni, faculty, staff and other stakeholders are grappling with what its demise means for each of them and how they move forward from here. Unfortunately, the constituents of several other colleges and universities are facing the same questions this year--and undoubtedly numerous other institutions will be confronting those questions during the balance of this decade. Since January 2024 alone, at least 16 institutions have announced they are merging with larger universities or ceasing operations, including Pennsylvania's Cabrini College, Salus University and Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences; New York's Wells College, Medaille College, and College of St. Rose; and Goddard College in Vermont. I don't do a lot of posting (I know, online-journalism-hustle-culture, I should, but I raise you: I'm busy, am an introvert, and don't want to) but figured I should say something about this story, which took nearly two years and roughly 18,000 words to report, about the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. HUC-JIR is *the* rabbinical school of the Reform movement. This story fulfills a lot of what I care about in journalism: A deep dive on a local issue that really matters to the community. HUC-JIR was started in Cincinnati nearly 150 years ago, and has grown into the oldest and largest rabbinical school in the world. Generations of rabbinical students served not just Cincinnati, but Jewish communities across the Midwest, South, and even small communities in Alaska and Canada. Likewise, generations of Cincinnatians supported the school. And yes, I know it's bonkers to have written 18,000 words on this -- really about anything nowadays. Two years ago I thought following up on the college would be basic ongoing coverage. But the story that community members kept telling me was too big to condense. So here we are. A look at the college's actual financials, the leadership that brought HUC-JIR to this moment, and what seems to be an effort to sell rare items from the Klau Library -- one of the greatest Jewish library collections in the world. I also hope this story complicates the way we talk about Jewish institutions, which -- for all the (rightful) focus on Jewish life outside the mainstream -- still form the backbone of Jewish life in this country and around the world. For the past several years, HUC-JIR has talked about itself basically as a helpless victim of changes in American Jewish life, like declining denominationalism and rabbinical enrollment. But so much of the college's story is about leadership, choices made, and choices not made. Which ties into one of the most important things I've come to appreciate about the world around us, from politics and religious life to economics and health insurance: The world we live in is a result of policy, not inertia. There's real disruption, but how we respond matters.

Dual enrollment (PSEO here in Minnesota) gives students the access to higher paying wages out of high school but also opportunities of certification completion options, WEXs, OJTs, apprenticeships, networking, and so much more. If partnered with local workforce or career-force programs to braid WIOA funds for In school youth (ISY), then you have an unstoppable possibility for retention and completion rates in all post-secondary institutions. Why make our students take HS courses if they can obtain the same credit for HS graduation and College Credit? And I am not referring to AP courses. College credit direct classes. Give our youth the means to start their adulthood with experiences, knowledge, and a deeper understanding of the workforce. Plus, free college for families before they even access PELL (which some students may not get full access to because if dependents until the age of 24, their parents income keep them from from eligible funds). Don't even get me going about the need for DUAL Enrollment for those in Adult Education programs while completing their High School Equivalencies...... That's another post and even more need for funding and demand WIN-WIN! I as a mother have had my two oldest children access dual enrollment, and I will preach it to all my friends and their children. #dualenrollment #PSEO #collegecredit #highereducation

Concordia St. Paul’s growth over recent years through CSP and CSP Global has positioned CSP as a leader in Lutheran higher education. As of this fall, CSP is now the second-largest Lutheran university in America and continues to be the second-largest private university (all affiliations) in Minnesota. As one of six institutions of the Concordia University System (CUS), CSP is proud to be an agency of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Together, these universities share a vibrant Lutheran identity as their foundational principle and prepare students for careers in the church and society. A report from the 2022-23 academic year shows that CUS institutions served nearly 31,000 unique students across the country. In that report, Concordia St. Paul served just under 7,500 students.
