Ask less about what the field produces. Ask more about who the field is. We have launched an ambitious new agenda to build the field of 6000 community based development organizations. In today's Nonprofit Quarterly, I outline how the field got to this point, and why field building is critical NOW. The article implores funders and policymakers - who care about racial equity and the future of underserved places - to understand the field's identity more deeply. These organizations accelerate the equitable creation of opportunity within underserved communities. It's hard to imagine how we achieve equity and opportunity without them. And they will be stronger and more effective when national actors think of them as a field, and support them for the miracles that they are. New Jersey's Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit (#NRTC) program provides a unique funding method for community development organizations. By offering a 100% tax credit to businesses that fund nonprofit revitalization plans, NJ focuses on the ability to plan and execute comprehensive community projects rather than adhering to strict #CDC definitions like in #SC or #MA. Over the past year, hundreds of local people have shared their insights on the evolving needs of our region. Across these community engagement activities, we've heard common themes: Our region boasts significant assets, including a collaborative spirit, rich diversity, and a vibrant culture. These are the building blocks of a resilient and thriving community. Despite these strengths, we face substantial challenges, such as barriers to accessing basic resources and the need for sustained funding to maintain essential services. Notably, neighbors in some communities in the Sacramento region have been excluded from opportunities to flourish to a greater degree than our neighbors in others. Recognizing these obstacles is the first step toward overcoming them. Opportunities abound in local communities, including the potential to build cross-cultural and multi-sector networks, foster collective action, and promote trust-based philanthropy. These opportunities will guide us toward a just and vibrant Sacramento. Advisory Board for the Arts' recent Executive Benchmark study explored community engagement at arts and cultural organizations. Highlights from the survey include: • Community engagement is one of the main pillars of strategic plans for a majority (63%) of responding organizations, and the budget for that work has increased somewhat or significantly for over half of respondents. • Youth (ages 5-12) are the top priority for half of participating organizations’ resource allocation within community engagement programming. • Most responding orgs have 2-5 community engagement staff. While half of organizations use volunteers for general support of their community programs, most organizations do not feel that they depend heavily on volunteer support. • Foundation grants and individual gifts are the most important sources of funding for community initiatives at responding organizations. Since our launch in 2019, Más Allá  has joined movements such as Community-Centric Fundraising and Just Transition and use the principles of Grassroots Organizing, Asset-Based Community Development, Power, Belonging, Justice, and others so we can be in solidarity with partners. Why have we joined this movement and begun modeling more liberatory, caring, and just ways of working? Because we too believe in being intentional about strengthening our democracy, creating inclusive and caring economies, upholding relationships based on care, advocating for more equity in our systems, and one in which our planet is healthy and regenerative.
