Jumbo shrimp. HA! Icebergs. What could go wrong? Reality TV. Now that’s funnier than “jumbo shrimp.” But what happens when you don’t see the twist — What happens when you only see the surface and don’t know the mechanism that makes the machine work? 70% of American’s still trust local news broadcasts. And the local news is trusted by people across the political spectrum. Great! What’s lurking beneath the surface? (I didn’t mention ice bergs for nothing.) Sinclair Broadcast Group owns nearly 200 local news stations in about 90 markets. Sinclair Broadcast Group sends scripts to each station that the anchors are mandated to read. On any day, if you could tune in to every Sinclair station, you’d see the exact same story word for word. Local journalists — Producers, reporters, anchors — Must air mandated stories. They can't act independently. Not on the story selection, point of view, fact checks or presentation. It’s #MediaRecMonday and the recommendation for today is to know the ownership of your local news channel. The independence of the press matters. Even if you agree with the point of view — Even if you tune in and everything seems, “normal” — Take a moment to search the ownership of your local channel. Because you deserve to know. Dear Broadcasters, your script, the figures, statistics... all refer to humans and impact humans. As you deliver your news, remember that you are speaking to humans. Humans are social beings... Humans are emotional beings... When you pick that script, add life, zest to it... you are telling a story to humans and not machines. Make a decision to keep your viewers glued to their TV set till you are done with the news. That's the idea of Newscasting. Newscasting is not boring... Newscasting is news and exciting... I will give media broadcasters a tip in the most relaxing way today Broadcasters should stay attentive to the overall conditions of the video market. It's important for them to understand their political significance and actively work to influence decisions that could lead to a relaxation of regulations. #Broadcast #Media #Journalism

➡️ “It’s really problematic. We are not merely troublesome we are in a red alert situation in many many markets and as politics gets more polarized we have to decide what we do about institutions.” I don’t know a lot about PBS but folks I’m talking with have been thinking about this issue for a while, especially with many of the social impact companies shutting down, like Participant and Topic Studios. Outside of high awareness factual or biopic based programs IMO it’s very hard to connect with new movies and shows that feel like they’re leading hard with their social political agendas. Do we double down on niche or find more creative (and authentic) ways to tell stories that connect us? Maybe show us what drives a character that we can all relate (or aspire) to; show us new ways to see classic plot structures before trying to change hearts and minds. I believe films like Dune and Civil War did this effectively. Same with Fallout series. I’m going to try to take the extra effort to see these things in theaters this summer or watch them on first weekend on streaming. #storytelling #challenge
