I am excited to share that my article titled "The 'Algorithmic as if': Computational Resurrection and the Animation of the Dead in Deep Nostalgia" has been published in the New Media & Society journal. In this article, Paul Frosh and I explore the emergence of an "algorithmic as if" - a space where technology intersects with our deepest desires and existential challenges. Focusing on Deep Nostalgia, an online tool that creates animations from personal photographs of the deceased, we examine how such technological advancements promise to transcend mortality by digitally "resurrecting" loved ones. Through a close examination of Deep Nostalgia's processes and public discourse surrounding its 2021 launch, the article uncovers the fusion of computational learning, visual representation, and unique temporal shifts. These elements create a space where impossible longings intersect with the stark realities of human mortality.
