Here’s what most founders don’t know about the judging process for a pitch: I’m grateful for the honor to have not only helped pick FedEx grant winners before, but recently support the TiE Dallas selection process for the Singapore finals. ➡️ if you don’t follow the pitch rubric to a tee - you will be seen as less coachable ➡️ despite a rubric - it’s not the ONLY factor in selecting a winner ➡️ spending too much time answering judges questions during Q & A cuts time & makes you look nervous ➡️ the allocation of funds & services is a major factor in selecting a winner - how confident did you make them in your ability to execute? ➡️ they choose the one suited to best represent the organization at the end of the day Choosing to participate in a pitch opportunity can be extremely daunting. I’ve been there. I’ve been stressed, nervous & wanted to back out. 👉 BUT I NEVER regretted jumping in to hone my skills & grow my network. If you have the chance to pitch for a grant or live - go for it because you won’t regret it.
I attended a brilliant Enterprise Nation networking event yesterday; a massive shout out to Dan Martin for organising in person events and St George's Bristol for hosting - I know there are so many benefits to the digital world, but I still really love being able to meet and connect with people face to face! It was so nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new people; it was amazing to see the huge range of businesses just in one room and so inspiring to hear people speak so passionately about them. (*Slap on the wrist* - must not start another business.....yet 😇 ) We also talked a lot about the challenges people are facing, from burn out to future plans to the struggles following COVID. Business is rarely all sunshine and rainbows, and I think it is great for everyone to feel like they're not alone and share ideas on how they cope with things. This seems like the perfect time to say that Bristol City Council and West of England Growth Hub has a huge variety of support available for SME's; from mentoring and coaching to grants for R&D, help with exporting to support with your marketing plan! We all know that our industry (and the economy in general) is ageing and lacking in diversity: in all its forms. Yes, it's "pale, male and stale". And hey, I'm technically in that group! Well, for 2 out of 3 at least. I'm a big believer in supporting new entrants and young professionals in our industry. I'm also a huge believer in promoting and encouraging diversity - in all its forms - wherever possible. I'm not going to solve this problem by myself, and it will take years. But if we don't start then we're only going to have bigger problems in the future. If we all take some responsibility then we'll start making baby steps. The Builders Merchants Federation Ltd under the excellent leadership of John Newcomb have partnered with Dianne Lucas FCIM and started a fantastic campaign to launch the Building Materials sector - a huge awareness campaign which will shine a spotlight on all the fantastic opportunities in this sector - for school leavers and others further into their careers, for those outside and within the industry. This is a great start. We then need to remove barriers to development and progression. This comes from great leadership. And recognition. Hence why I'm so excited that here at Wilson Brook Consulting we're supporting the BMF & Builders' Merchants News next Top 100 event - the Top 100 Young Achievers - those who are rising through the industry and making their mark on the sector. Nominations will be made via an online form, hosted on the BMN website, with links from the BMF website. Nominees can be self-nominated or nominated by another person from the business. They must be 40 or under on 16 May 2024 (rules me out then!) from across the building materials industry; this can be a merchant, supplier, service supplier or from a buying group. The Top 100 Young Achievers will be celebrated at a black-tie gala dinner on the 16 May 2024, at The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield.
