The shortcomings in the communication strategy regarding the Princess of Wales's medical leave have been well documented. As a professional communicator, it's baffling to see the royal family persist in opting for silence as their strategy, leaving the public to fill in the blanks. And fill them in they did. Rumors flew, amplified by supposed "experts," to the extent that Princess Kate felt compelled to create a video to demonstrate proof-of-life and a commitment to her family, as anything less would have been inadequate. Now, the palace is recruiting a communications assistant to support the team. With an annual salary of $32,000, this position aims to promote "the work, role, relevance, and value of the Royal Family to a worldwide audience."
While Lee Thompson oversees public relations for the Prince and Princess of Wales, it's disheartening to see the addition of such a junior and poorly compensated role to the team. As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for," and at this rate, the royals haven't truly committed to investing in strategic thinking that could reshape public perception or manage the narratives surrounding them. Communication may seem straightforward, but it demands strategic thinking and an appreciation of various perspectives to determine the appropriate messaging. Too often, organizations skimp on hiring communication professionals and subsequently suffer the consequences. If the royals haven't gleaned this lesson, we can only hope that other organizations have learned from their mistakes. #princesskate #communications #topvoices
