Those of you who are frequently invited to speak at events or be on panel discussions, how much of preparation do you do? With the kind of speaking engagements that I have (at least 5 to 6 a month), it becomes very tough, especially when each organizer has their own idea of what is expected and gives the session a fancy title. One thing I religiously follow is not to rehash an earlier presentation and re-run it. We may think it's just an hour's event and my time will be 15 minutes in that so I can get away. I fear being unprepared. I ask who the audience is and what is the context? how does it fit in with the other sessions? and I pester the organizers till I get that information, however incomplete. Then I ask myself, what is it the audience needs to know? And then I prepare accordingly. The test of whether I spoke to the context is to see how many in the audience reached out to me immediately after I spoke, and a week to a month after I spoke. The bonus is when someone years after being in the audience comes up to you and says, "I heard you at so and so event back in time". That is priceless, both uplifting and humbling, and what inspires me to work harder for every occasion that I am asked to speak. Do share about how you prepare. Thanks. #publicspeaking

When nervous, we say most awful things to ourselves that we would never say to anyone else. Wrong labels can keep you from achieving a successful public speaking. Today I coached a Global IT Service Manager to prepare to host an all day event with keynotes, panel discussions, pitch competitions and quizes throughout the day. As a host, you have many moments of interaction with the audience and the guest speakers to help the day flow smoothly. Here are 6 tips for hosting an all day event: 1. Prepare you opening welcome and give a brief overview of what the day will hold for the attendees. 2. Introduce yourself with your title confidently to gain credibility 3. Create many "bridge" statements that you can use to finish off one session and bridge to the new session or new speaker. Don't use the same phrases, but have several in your pocket to help the flow of the day. 4. SUPER TIP: Be conscious to listen to the speakers of the day as much as you can - and have a pen and small paper nearby for when you hear a remarkable statement or quote from the speaker. Write them down and then in your closing review of the day - mention a few quotes and the persons who said them - to make the closing even more memorable. 5. Maybe drop in a call to action at the end - to get the audience to do ONE thing as a result of this day... 6. Prepare your closing words - Thank the speakers who were involved in a general way, thank the audience and invite them for drinks if that has been arranged or simply, "until next time". Many things to do and say as host of an event- but if you prepare well and can think on your feet with confidence and presence - your event will be brilliant - just like you... #everybodyneedsabarbara

"What is the best way to start landing speaking gigs?" 🎤 Katy Boos's answer: 1. Think about the audience you want to reach and what events they might attend. 2. Do a deep dive into those events: Look at the topics they cover, the type of speakers they have, the level of speakers, and the format of the sessions (panels, standalone sessions, etc.) 3. Develop a topic you think this audience would love to hear about. ⚠️ DON'T pitch your company or products – conference organizers and attendees hate that. Instead, think about industry topics that are interesting and timely. Find and complete the call for speakers for the events where you’d like to speak. You’ll likely need to reach out to several events before you land one. When you do land a speaking engagement, be sure to maximize it via social media posts before, during and after! 📸

If there's one thing we all have, it's a story. Stories are what make up our lives, and there's no better way to really LIVE them than to share them with the world, especially since no 2 stories are the same! They are as unique as we are different. I would personally love to hear your story from you instead of hearing about it when they are reading your eulogy. I mean, you aren't even present to truly appreciate it when you're in the casket. This week's theme is: "My Achievements So Far Against All Odds", and will run from Thursday (29/2/2024) to Wednesday (6/3/2024) So, what do you say we get together, and tell your story to the world from the comfort of your own home/room/space?
