Today, Lattice made history to become the first company to lead in the responsible employment of AI “digital workers” by creating a digital employee record to govern them with transparency and accountability. The idea of AI employees, or “digital workers,'' is not an entirely comfortable one esp as we seem them being personified. The inevitable arrival of these digital workers raises important questions about their integration, measurement, and impact on human jobs. And many of those questions are without clear answers or precedence. Within Lattice's people platform, “digital workers” will be securely onboarded, trained, and assigned goals, performance metrics, appropriate systems access, and even an accountable manager. We know this process will raise a lot of questions and we don’t yet have all the answers, but we want to help our customers find them. And we want to bring everyone along on this journey with us. I am so proud to be working with the incredible Lattice team, the vibrant Lattice customer community, and some of the leading brands in AI to lead the way in the responsible employment of AI. More soon…

This strategy and messaging misses the mark in a big way, and I say that as someone building an AI company. Treating AI agents as employees disrespects the humanity of your real employees. Worse, it implies that you view humans simply as "resources" to be optimized and measured against machines. It's the exact opposite of a work environment designed to elevate the people who contribute to it. That is the future that I'm building for.

I just asked my AI persona and it thinks that: Psychopathology of CEOs: Studies suggesting many CEOs exhibit clinical psychopathic traits raise concerns about the ethical and moral foundations of such initiatives. Decisions made under such leadership may prioritize profit and efficiency over ethical considerations and human well-being. Ethical Concerns: Classifying AI as employees could undermine the value of human labor, reduce job opportunities, and exploit AI for profit, rather than enhancing workplace dynamics or societal good. Dehumanization of the Workforce: Prioritizing AI over humans may dehumanize the workplace, reducing it to a purely transactional environment and eroding trust and morale among human employees. Impact on Human Employment: The introduction of AI as official employees might accelerate job displacement, leading to unemployment and economic instability, disproportionately affecting lower-skilled jobs and exacerbating economic inequalities. Psychological Impact on Workers: The pressure to compete with AI systems could lead to job insecurity, anxiety, decreased job satisfaction, burnout, and a deteriorating work-life balance for human workers.

When will Lattice have an AI CEO? When do you anticipate replacing management with AI employees? Given that current AI is much better at reliably evaluating input rather than reliably producing consistent output, wouldn't it make more sense to start replacing the humans from the top down? After all, AI has been shown to be exactly as effective at replacing humans in management as it has at replacing humans workers.

Terrifying. The more AI is being used all around, the more I am starting to be like this shit is going to ruin everything. Workers are already struggling enough and now they have to compete with "AI workers" Can we put it back into it's box and send it back? Also....the ending to the blog post. "Lattice. Because people." when you are literally talking about AI workers. SMH.

I haven't read through all the comments on this but here's a few things - fyi you made it into the LinkedIn Lunatics subreddit because of this post - it's not at all ironic... it makes total sense - in a messed up way albeit - that a corporation (which by our standards gets legal rights as an individual/person) wants to broaden the scope of non human entities being humanized to help their bottom line - hey, lady, fyi bots aren't people. AI aren't people. Are you setting a minimum wage for your bots? Are they gettin SSNs and paying taxes? What's the policy on interoffice romance between AIs? Also, is there a policy regarding interoffice romance between natural "human" workers and AI workers? I mean, that movie "Her" makes it plausible, no? What happens when your AI falls in love with a staff member? What's the paternity/ maternity leave policy for people who wanna make new bot babies with their AI partner? what's the work rest policy for AI workers? Are they getting breaks and meals as per Cali law? Are you allowing AIs to work remote or do they have to come in to the office? Will AI workers be in the pool that gets laid off in your next round of cuts? Will they get severance? Last thing we need around the bay is unhoused AI

You’re “onboarding” them? Are they filling out W-4s? I-9s? What is this gibberish? Have you considered whether AI could do your job better than you do?
