(Gonna start this post with current information, sidetrack into a little origin story, then loop back around. As usual, I am not known for my brevity. Sappy post incoming) I spent last week, my third at Tackle.io, at the company offsite getting to know my team, hearing from Tackle customers, and meeting so many of the people I support (read: Tackle employees). As I was planning for this trip, I thought it would be fun and interesting to match my wardrobe to Tackle’s brand colors, so I did! Throughout the week, I got the chance to explain my deliberately extra choice to a handful of people and got to see the amazement at both my audacity and creativity. (It was so well received that I’m slightly worried that I set the bar too high for future offsites and my standard business on top/comfort on the bottom wardrobe 😅) I’m so grateful and lucky to have found now two consecutive employers who support the entirety of me; including my love of bright colors, bold makeup, and a slight flair for the dramatics. I have a lot of personality and not a lot of height, so I do what I can. It hasn’t always been like this for me. I’ve had my fair share of employers worried about whether I’d be a good “culture-fit” or other overtly discriminatory statements couched in corporate language. I’m very glad to be at a point in my career where people don’t look at the things that make me me and strip away those pieces for the sole purpose of trying to fit me in a narrow, prescriptive box of “professional”. I can now wear my natural hair, in and out of protective styles, and my beloved press-on nails at whatever length I feel like. So, I boarded my plane with my bright purple/pink ombré hair (and my signature rainbow), a non-zero amount of anxiety around what to do if things went wrong, and an extra pinch of kindness for the past versions of me who did not have the same opportunity to shine. When faced with the choice between being myself and being able to pay my bills, paying bills always won. The anxiety was all for naught. Everything went so, so well. To write about all the good would take an entire series of posts. The hard part about starting someplace new is that you have to reset everything about what’s normal to you and learn the collective norms of the space. With my team, there was none of that. I was welcomed with open arms and cookie jars. I’ve gotta be close to character limits now, so I’ll wrap it up with this: Cheers to the bold and the brightly-pigmented! Like it or not, colleagues and prospective employers will judge that photo, said Tessa West, author of the forthcoming book “Job Therapy” and a professor of psychology at New York University. “Everything from someone’s hair to earrings…influences our unconscious judgments of their personality,” she said. “Those are very difficult to override.” The good news? You can nail your headshot with a minimum of second-guessing if you know what to focus on, say pros. Start by figuring out what you want to convey, says Weitz, who asks, “What is your personal brand?” Perhaps it’s hard-won corporate wisdom—or go-getter creativity? Remember when dress code was a hot topic. Memory lane share... Cathy was referred to me by another client. Our first call she told me she did not trust agencies, that the candidates dressed sloppy and on and on. I was very taken aback-but I also learned to let it roll so I agreed to a meeting. She made it clear she wanted to check me out before she gave me any business. Since Cathy made a big stink about "dress code" as she said many times, I wore my navy blue pants suit & silk blouse and of course my pen & pad (Thank goodness those days are over.) When we met, I was taken aback on her "dress code" of sneakers & slacks with tattered hems. As I sat across from her at her huge desk, she continued on regarding more about agencies and how sloppy the candidates she met from said agencies dressed. #rockystart I am not sure at what point I got the chutzpa to speak up and push back. But midway, I kind of let it rip. By the time we finished our "meeting" we were fast friends. I am not sure what the shift was but I found my voice. 👊 As time unfolded, Cathy hired many of the candidates I sent and we joked about our rough start. Since, I've noticed, ties aren't as prevalent in professional attire anymore. Plus, as my hair has turned grey over the years, I've come to see it as a badge of experience. 🧑🦳 Some argue that sticking to one photo builds recognition and personal branding. After all, it becomes your signature look, your visual identity in the professional world.
