If I'm going to brave traffic, knowing I won't have to also fight for parking is a breath of fresh air." With so much panic going around about low accept rates, differentiation, and making your event stand out— imagine my relief when I realized how easy these variables are to control, and would be to repeat. As organizers, it's easy to get caught up in "attendee experience." But is it possible that approaching our guests as attendees and not just ✨ people ✨ has us overthinking the whole thing? Basic human treatment. Basic human interests met. And just like that, we had an incredible night 🎇

When was the last time you sent a "good job" email to a vendor, client, or other professional business partner? I just sent one today. I recently attended an event for International Live Events Association (ILEA) NY Metro chapter. This was my first time attending one of their events. I am a vegan and was disappointed to learn that there was only one small vegan option for me to eat. One of their servers, offered food but I declined. He took the initiative to ask if I wanted something else. I explained that I'm vegan and I only eat plant based food. He told me to wait and he returned to my table a few minutes later with a few vegan hors d'oeuvres. He told me that he went to the kitchen staff and had them customize a dish to meet my accommodation. I was incredibly impressed and so were the 6 other attendees at my table. We all said how important it is to empower your team members to make these kinds of decisions to deliver a stellar experience. As an event producer, these are the kinds of vendors I want to hire and make long lasting relationships with. An event host cannot be everywhere at once. Every single person offering a service on site has the power to make or break the experience and impression that people have. I appreciate that Delivering Experiences truly delivered a positive experience for me and the other guests! These are the kinds of businesses I will continue to do business with. The power of open networking - a true story. Whenever you book into a meet the buyer forum with DP Business Events, we'll book 24 face to face meetings for you. What's more, our buyers get to choose who they want to see, so if someone has elected to sit down with you, you know you're off to a great start. But the meetings are just a small part. Let’s dot it - a first HUMAN RESOURCES mystery lunch with members of my Basel network. What is a mystery lunch? Mystery lunches offer professionals a unique networking opportunity to expand the contacts and build relationships in the respective industry/practice. These events pair participants randomly for a lunch meeting at a designated location. It’s a total surprise. In our case, I suggest to meet on July 5th and July 12th at noon on both dates at Markthalle/Basel with many lunch choices so that participants can get/buy whatever they prefer. The element of surprise leads to unexpected conversations and interactions, fostering new ideas and perspectives. By stepping out of our comfort zone, we can broaden our network and potentially uncover totally new opportunities. What "flavor" are you taking on when networking? 🍅🍓 Tomatoes and strawberries suggest that we are indeed influenced by the company we keep! I recently had a snack bag epiphany - combining my favorite treats led to a surprising discovery. One tomato in particular ended up smelling and tasting like a strawberry 🤯. Just like the snacks we choose, we subconsciously adopt the "flavor" of those around us. As we head into the short holiday week, remember to select networking events wisely. It's #conferenceseason in the #apartmentindustry. That means great learning, wonderful #networking, and fun events hosted by our #industrypartners. In the last few days, I've had some interesting conversations with some #multifamily suppliers that were sadly #eyeopening. And I'd be remiss if I didn't share some (horrifying) feedback I received with my LinkedIn network. We started talking about the behavior of some (definitely not the majority)of #apartmentmanagement employees at some of these events. And I have to say, I was left speechless. And if you know me at all, that's hard to do. Here's what I learned: *At some lunches hosted by our industry partners, people actually order 'dinner to go' at the same time. #unbelievable. *Some people accept tickets to great events and then don't even bother to respond to follow-up emails or calls by the company that gave them the tickets. *Some sit down at dinner and order the 'most expensive bottle of wine' (that's a quote) without asking what type of wine it is. *This behavior is followed up with, "What's the most expensive thing on the menu?" and proceeding to order that. *Some call an industry partner (that they have rudely blown off) to ask for a job. Why would a supplier hire someone who has never used their product? I could - sadly - go on and on with these behaviors. Let's make a point to treat our partners with the respect they deserve. We wouldn't have our events without them. They literally fund EVERYTHING with their generosity. I want to talk about the 80/20 rule.... In my past life, I ran high volume hiring events for Amazon. These were usually held in the ballroom or meeting space of a hotel like a Hilton Garden Inn or an Embassy Suites. These events could have as many as 300 people a day and they always were the same; Check people in, give an overview of the job and what they could expect. We would then conduct an oral drug test and collect the chain of custody form once they finished. Even though there were always hundreds of people a day and just a few of us (usually just 2, maybe 3, never 4), as long as we were organized, we could give our best selves to the attendees and ensure everyone had a good experience because we were unhurried and prepared. Anyway, the 80/20 rule. 20% is organization. checking that we had (more than) enough supplies on hand, that we had the meeting place booked and paid for in advance, that we had the equipment we needed (laptops, projectors, pens, extra forms, etc.) to be successful AND, the most important thing; make sure you have time to get everything organized when you get there to set up that day. That’s the 20% of it; get there early and be prepared. When you do that, the rest of the day (the 80%) flows easy and it’s fun. Which means you can be present for what needs to be done rather than playing catch up. The trick is however, being diligent about that 20% because that actually requires you to show up an hour to 90 minutes before the event starts to make sure that everything is set up for the day. It also requires you to spend time every week planning ahead and securing future venue space and building relationships with banquet managers and site leaders to do so. It requires doing a regular audit of your own supply stores; making sure you have enough COC forms, enough test kits, enough pens. Nothing is more stressful than doing an event and realizing you might not have enough supplies for that day and will have to turn people away if you can’t get any more. That 20% creeps into other parts of your life; Getting gas the night before instead of when you wake up makes the rest of the day go smoother. Laying out your clothes the night before saves crazy amounts of time the next morning. Setting the coffee maker to brew automatically feels like a genius move when you wake up and there is fresh coffee waiting for you, rather than trying to make some then, or stopping for some on your way when you are trying to get your day going. In my opinion, being unhurried is something to always strive for and the best part is that it's something we can attain if we choose to. Thats not to say that life doesn’t happen, and improvisation needs to kick in hard when it does, but doing the little mundane things every day that saves time later allow us to zero in on what's important; giving others our best and focusing on the details that matter. #5daybrandingchallenge #talentacquisition #paretoprinciple #unhurried #stitchintimesaves9
