It has been a fascinating 36 hours since Meta announced that it will discontinue its Workplace App. I have read hundreds of posts from Platforms, but not one post as yet from a Head of Internal Communications. Quite rightly, Heads of IC are reflecting on the announcement and considering their next steps. Yesterday, I had a coffee with Steve Mann (Ex-GM of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Kmart Group). Our conversation quickly moved to the Meta announcement, and Steve shared how he would have approached this opportunity if still in role. I found his insights clear and concise and I will do my best to paraphrase his thinking: It's huge news, but overall, I see it as a real positive. It is so hard for internal communications strategies to get prioritised or resourced at a leadership level and for many leaders they have been handed a unique opportunity. If I were a Workplace customer, I would be doing the following: Firstly, I'd go straight to Meta and ask them what it means for us. What does this decision mean for our organisation? What are the timelines and what is the compensation plan? Then, I would form a picture of what this looks like for our organisation. Firstly, what is the critical path?  I would socialise the critical path with leaders, along with the fact that we're reviewing our strategy and are assessing our options. Leaders need to know that there is an issue that requires the right level of focus. With leaders on board, I would conduct a full review of our internal comms strategy across the organisation, starting from frontline employees and working my way back. This is a great opportunity to nail your strategy, so that you understand what your organisation needs. Next, I would review options in the market. What technology is available, and which option is the best fit for our specific needs? From there, I would build a migration and launch roadmap that aligns with the timings established with Meta. This approach ensures a smooth transition, but also helps to accelerate your internal comms strategy and performance. Great Insights Steve Mann! Anything I missed?

I love this job posting so much because so many companies have marketing/comms roles where they describe wanting to hire “storytellers” and they almost never consider hiring journalists. Pro-tip: if you want someone to tell your company’s story, then hire a journalist. Better yet, put it in the job description.

From standing outside the Today Show studio in a robe for a Dove consumer campaign to helping Facebook communicate its Meta rebrand, to leading Americas comms for Tinder, and, now establishing the beauty brand Benefit Cosmetics' first comms leadership role, Lisa Stratton has seen and learned some things at interesting places to work. But, in overcoming significant personal challenges, she also has gained broader perspective: "I think I gained resilience every time I went through something crappy. What changes over time is just having a stronger sense of perspective on what really matters. And what really matters is people, how you treat one another, the relationships you have with one another, being able to have honest, transparent, respectful conversations with people, and to have fun at work to the extent that you can. I know tough things happen, especially in communications. We deal with crises all the time, and sometimes they're really serious issues. But banding together with that group of people around you, getting through that problem as quickly as possible, and then getting back to the fun stuff that you had planned. That's always the goal. "When tough situations come up at work, I've always had a really strong sense of fairness. I’m always willing to have a tough conversation. Let's be honest about what a project outcome is. Push back on that crappy feedback. Call out that sexist remark that you heard. Those are the things that feel less daunting to deal with when you have been through some really challenging personal situations. You have to stand up for yourself and those around you, be principled and intentional when they do happen. But at the same time, always focus on the people and on having a good time at work.
