✨ Yesterday I wrapped up my first week as a Data Scientist at Warner Bros. Discovery! I'm beyond grateful for the warm welcome from the Max Growth Machine Learning teams and am excited to keep learning from everyone. I wanted to share a bit of advice for those interested in a career in data science. A common question I get when helping students with recruitment for technical internships or full-time roles is: "Do I need to be an expert in coding to succeed in the interview or on the job?" When I was going through recruitment, I had the same question. I used to think I needed to know everything about data science to succeed. But through my experiences, I've learned that what really matters is showing a strong eagerness to learn and a solid grasp of basic coding, statistics, and machine learning concepts—skills you've likely already developed in school. With that foundation, you'll have a great shot at landing your dream role. The same goes for starting a new job. Your managers and mentors don't expect you to know everything—they want to teach you! Even now, I sometimes feel anxious about asking questions or seeking clarification, but I’ve been reminded that in the real world, asking questions is encouraged and doesn’t make you seem less ‘smart.’ This is something I was reassured of in my first week here at WBD! So no, you don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to be passionate about learning and continually building your skills. (Of course, this may vary for grad students or those aiming for higher-level data science positions.) I hope this resonates with any students currently recruiting or starting a new role. Losing your job is scary, and even for mid-career professionals, it can be a daunting task to get back into a competitive job market. Alex Dang had spent four years working at Lyft when he was laid off during COVID. We caught up to learn his top tips for navigating this competitive job market:  🞄 When you talk to a recruiter, it’s not an interview. Talking to a recruiter is a phone screen that judges you are, at a minimum, worth the team’s time.  🞄 For data science job interviews, there is always an SQL question, product case questions, and product analytics problems.  🞄 For SQL questions, companies want to gauge your understanding of it; they test if you can write it on the spot.  🞄 Companies want to find out every candidate’s business sense and how well they understand the industry.  🞄 Interviewers will ask questions that cover concepts, and there will be “gotcha” questions. A fresh grad might remember the book answer, but you also need work experience to make the answers relevant.  🞄 During interviews, you can’t miss anything, and every question or gesture is an opportunity to signal who you are and the value you bring to an organization. I am currently planning the fall 2024 NYU Data Science career events for our undergrad students. I have provided a full list of the opportunities that we offer to companies looking to connect with our undergraduate population. For fall 2024 we will be offering company informational sessions which are a great opportunity for recruiting students for full time roles and/or internships. These sessions typically last about an hour. We ask that companies are currently hiring. We find that these events work best when there is a representative from the data science team and someone who can speak to the recruitment/hiring process. Typically the sessions are 1 hour. If possible and within the company budget we like to ask the companies to provide pizza or a light snack. The second option is hosting a pizza chat event, these events are designed support student growth and promote a better understanding on what the transition from university life to corporate life is like. I like to pitch these events as things that you wish you knew about the corporate environment when you were in the very early stages of your career. In the past these talks have focused on aspects of the job search, programming language tutorials, how to present data to people who are not fluent in data science, AMAs, etc. CDS will provide the pizza for these events.  If you are interested in connecting with our undergrads you can either respond here or email me at [email protected].

What has been your biggest barrier when pursuing a career in data? For me, it was my non-tech background. I studied life science in my higher education. I completed a Bachelor's in Biological Sciences and a Master's in Neuroscience. However, during my graduate school years, I ended up in a lab that does a lot of data science work where I get to collect data and create prediction models using Python. That's when I fell in love with data and wanted to pursue a career in this field. However, in my job search journey, I found it difficult to convince employers of my skills in data. I did not have the traditional background of having a quantitative degree like computer science or mathematics. I also didn't have internships to sell myself on. Regarding job applications, employers are looking for candidates with these backgrounds. Without them, employers won't trust your skills and competency; you're seen as a risky hire. That's why it's very important to build a portfolio demonstrating your technical skills and ability to solve real-world problems for non-technical stakeholders. #dataanalyst #datascience #career #transition
