A collision between a sanctions-skirting VLCC involved in Iranian oil trades and a Hafnia product tanker has left both vessels ablaze. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said it was alerted on July 19 around 0615hrs about fires aboard the Singapore-flagged tanker Hafnia Nile (IMO: 9766217) and the São Tomé and Príncipe-flagged tanker Ceres I (IMO: 9229439), located around 55km northeast of Pedra Branca within Singapore's Maritime Search and Rescue Region. Ceres I has previously been identified as engaging in probable AIS spoofing activity by Lloyd's List Intelligence's Seasearcher Advanced Risk & Compliance platform: https://lnkd.in/ei3XmrdA Vessel tracking data indicates that Ceres I appeared to have its AIS switched on at the time of the accident, but the signals showed an irregular pattern not consistent with a tanker at anchorage. Reports are that the tanker which was targeted is currently or was on fire. We anticipate a response within the next 24-48 as that will make the maximum amount of impact. However, it is clear that the Houthis are still not yet backing down and stronger measures may be necessary to meet this threat.

This operation is part of increased maritime surveillance to combat the country's severe economic challenges caused by unrelenting oil theft. Tantita Security Service Company intercepted MT Kali in Warri, prompting a visit from General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff. Chief of Naval Staff Emmanuel Ogalla emphasized the ongoing investigations and the need for thorough and swift prosecution of suspects. The Central Bank of Nigeria's Governor, Yemi Cardoso, has warned of potential revenue drops in 2024 due to OPEC's new crude oil production quota, oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and divestment from the upstream oil sector. Confiscated vessels, including MT Habour Spirit, MT Kali, MT Size Nail, MT Okito, MT Bullarenous, and MT Sweet Mary, are used to steal crude oil from pipelines and transfer it to larger tankers on the high seas. The incident with the supertanker MT Heroic Idun in August 2022, which attempted to load oil without proper documentation, underscores the vulnerability of Nigeria's maritime space. Such audacity indicates possible collusion with influential individuals, further demonstrating the challenges in securing the nation's 315,240 square-kilometer maritime area. Now had they reached out for a security team, it could have been prevented with between $5 million-$10 million considering how much security they were willing to pay for. Now if they wanted to get their ship back along with the crew, I would a 24/7 Tactical operations team, I would need to find the ship because all tracking systems have been disabled, I would need a drone to scan massive areas of the ocean. Then I would need to assemble a team who has experience in maritime operations and find a helicopter to raid a ship that’s almost impossible to stealthily and safely deploy a team onto a moving vessel. Not to mention they are on a race against time because they can port between Yemen and Iran. This would be a highly dangerous operation to execute and I would have to consider do I even want to put my team members lives in danger. One rpg can injure ALL of best case scenario and worst case, give us a oceanic funeral. This hijacking has affected their business because they can’t provide whatever services that were promised. A helicopter has to know where it’s going, and has to plot a course for where the ship WILL BE, and they have to get their soldiers on the ship quickly or else the helicopter will burn fuel it doesn’t have and the closer they get to a half tank, the more danger the raid becomes. I wonder have told the captain to speed up and when the helicopter came in range of our long range weapons I would order my team to fire on the pilots of the helicopter, on the propellers, how long would a pilot risk a half inch to 25mm size bullet, incendiary, explosive, armor penetrating round possibly hitting one of the pilots? The closer that helicopter gets it has to stabilize to safely deploy their forces. Now the ship can evade and with more speed force that helicopter pilot to make some risky decisions. As a security team, I’m now limited to one rifle. I can arrange a formation of consistent automatic fire that means those soldiers would have been under a barrage of gunfire before they exited the helicopter. Long story short, it just wouldn’t have happened. Now you can say, that’s not necessary but now how much has been lost because they didn’t invest in risk management assurances? I believe $10 million is a worthy investment and great deterrent. It would have made EVERY American proud! Every Freedom lover Proud! This isn’t a Israeli/Palestine issue, this is a “Im not playing games with governments, who would launch an assault like this! Because the owners we’re Israeli? Most israeIsraelis outside of Israel are condemning the war. Do you think the Houthi’s radio’d ahead to ask their political stance? Now, if you run a business on this level, how much longer will you take unnecessary risk?
