Maria is a rock star. Her manager and colleagues depend on her for delivering high quality work consistently. Yet, in meetings and team discussions, her contributions often go unnoticed, her voice drowned out by louder, more assertive colleagues. This goes on for a few years. Maria is the backbone of her team. She is the person everyone turns to when need arises to execute a project. Or solve a problem. And yet her name is left off from awards and recognitions. She is invisible as she watches as others receive promotions and raises for projects she significantly contributed to. Maria wonders if her background, her accent, or her lack of social capital are the reasons she's not progressing. She had left a lot behind in her journey to the United States. Had sacrificed so much - her family, her friends, her life. She felt the weight of that decision profoundly. Every day. Feeling at an all time low, Maria talks to a few people in her network, hoping to gather some inspiration. Their advice boils down to this, "Maria, you need to be intentional about steering your career. You have to pick yourself - don't wait for anyone." Something, clicks in her mind. She feels a surge of energy. I am not going to allow my career to languish, she determined. I am going to build network, I am going to assert myself and I am going carve my own path forward. With a renewed sense of empowerment, Maria works with a coach and starts to change her approach. She begins networking, connecting with colleagues across different functions. She develops executive presence and emotional balance. She voices her ideas in meetings with confidence, showcasing her expertise and value. She is an influential contributor in her organization. Taking control of her destiny is empowering and self-fulfilling. As she feels more and more confident, her career begins to shift forward with significant momentum. I recently had a session with a client who experienced just this. Despite a stellar track record and multiple promotions, he found himself questioning his worth after a challenging series of job applications within his company. After his boss departed, he seized the opportunity to apply for the vacant position and two others, aiming for further growth. Despite excelling in his current role, the journey wasn't smooth. He faced discouraging feedback, endured multiple rounds of interviews without updates, and ultimately received rejections. This rollercoaster of experiences led him to question, "Am I good enough?" However, the narrative took a positive turn. One of the roles he applied for didn't pan out, but the hiring manager recognized his potential and offered to create a new position tailored for him. This gesture was a significant reminder of his value and reignited his confidence. This story underscores a powerful lesson: self-perception can significantly impact our professional journey. When life goes beyond your career aspirations. My story: From a bit of a difficult and loving start in life, with the support of some great people, I climbed the greasy pole to take my place at the big table. Then, almost holding my breath, I jumped into a new world, created Go For Growth and started focusing on my first love: dispute resolution in employment, coaching beyond today and researching how senior leaders sustain momentum for the long-term. I picked up a few accreditations and ‘what nots’ along the way. I work with leaders, professionals and other fascinating people, with significant experience under their belts. We deal with staying or returning to feeling good whilst operating in the space beyond what I call ‘normal career development’. It is all about understanding and leveraging your strengths, experimenting and learning what could be possible: how to stay relevant in a way that makes sense and sits well with you. #Voicingpossibilities. My current story: Maybe like you, I’m transitioning. I create and deliver Space to Think retreats based on the Voicing Possibilities process of - dreaming big, dealing with frustrations, problem solving, unleashing the creative mind, connecting to what matters and deciding next steps. It’s a fascinating process tailored to each person or group. My inspiration comes from a somewhat challenging line in a Mary Oliver poem: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” A tip: Why not find a space to think about what really matters to you. Notice if you find of easy or a challenge to be on your own. After countless unsuccessful attempts, he found himself without results and direction. But, as life often surprises us, an unexpected connection changed everything. During a class, my fitness coach and her client talked about the challenges and aspirations in the job market. Nice work, Mita Mallick - thank you for writing such a helpful article for so many who create opportunities for improving work environments through efforts to advance groups of people who are known to be vulnerable and identify as such. Real leaders, not to be mistaken for people who have been placed in a position (for reasons alternative to what’s stated publicly and within the team), accept the vulnerability of all members of the team or working group, and we work in support of those who are most vulnerable. Not all people in a position of “leadership” are working to help all members of her/his team.
