Did you know that Royal Enfield was on the brink of shutting down in 2000? Fast forward to today, and it generates 90% of Eicher Motors' profits! But how did this remarkable turnaround happen? In the early 90s, the motorcycle industry experienced unprecedented growth. Seizing the opportunity, Royal Enfield shifted its focus from the UK to the Indian market.  However, the entry of Japanese giants like Yamaha Corporation and Jawa with their affordable, high-quality bikes soon flooded the Indian market, pushing Royal Enfield to the edge of bankruptcy. The pivotal moment came in 1994 when Eicher Motors acquired Royal Enfield. Despite Eicher’s efforts to revive the brand, they faced significant losses and considered shutting it down. Enter Siddhartha Lal, the CEO’s son, with a bold vision for the company. His innovative strategies included: Streamlining Operations: Shutting down 13 out of 15 businesses, Eicher Motors focused solely on bikes and trucks, diverting all resources to these core areas. Understanding Biker Needs: As a passionate biker, Lal immersed himself in the biker community. He mandated all employees to commute exclusively on Enfields, gathering direct feedback to address real issues. Cultivating a Community: Lal built a strong identity around Royal Enfield by sponsoring off-road rallies, adventure rides, and rider clubs. He enhanced the buying experience with classic retail outlets and positioned the brand as a symbol of social status. These strategies paid off, and by 2015, Royal Enfield was recognized for its exceptional marketing and sales. Today, Royal Enfield motorcycles are sold in over 50 countries and hold a 30% market share in the UK. Royal Enfield holds a special place in my heart. My first Bullet ride in 2002 was love at first ride. Truly, one of India’s greatest company revival stories!

Eicher motors is the biggest multi bagger over the last 30 years with a return of + 98,100%. I bought my first pre owned Royal Enfield bulletin in 2001 and the Std 500 cc bullet in 2003. Which I still own Must have spent a total of 1.25 lacs on both the bikes I’m wondering what if I had bought the Eicher Stock worth 1.25 lacs at that time!

I read his full story earlier as I am also so passionate about bikes, what I liked in his story, is that he made the hard decision at that time and listened only to his heart, before reentering the market he decided to sit with those personas who are going to use it so that he can build his product much better and fill out the gaps, and the last he proved his decision was right creating a big community.
