No import of ammunition from next year, India is self-sufficient: Army The Indian Army is planning to stop all ammunition imports to India from the next financial year. The decision has been made considering the ramped up capacities of domestic industry to meet the current demands. Up until a few years ago, the Indian Army was heavily dependent on the import of arms to meet their requirements. But now, we have mastered the local manufacturing of 150 out of 175 types of ammunition. The rest is still being imported. Indian Army, however, plans to cut this number out completely by 2025-26, except for the cases where quantity is low or the manufacturing isn’t economically viable. Currently, the Indian Army is importing ammos worth 6000-8000 Crores annually. All of which will be sourced locally going forth. India is, in fact, planning on exporting some of the locally manufactured ammunition to global markets. The global ammo market is worth $30 billion. And right now, India's contribution to it is less than 1%. The plan is to scale it to 5-10% in the next 5 years, and up to 30% in the future. India is becoming self-sufficient!

Good that India has learnt a lesson from Ukraine war. Wars can last for years, especially if your enemies are global military powers. Not having manufacturing capabilities in the country means arms suppliers can black mail you, even deny critical supplies when most needed. I know that we are far away from being self sufficient in high tech items like aircraft engines. Hope we have a plan to be self sufficient there too. All the best!

It is a worth celebrating event, but import must not fully stop to keep up with the update and global arms lobby. It will turn the old relations redundent and cut of experience of Defence Forces from international weapons. Which is a must never do thing.

This is a significant milestone for India's defense sector! The decision to halt ammunition imports showcases the country's commitment to self-reliance and bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities. With 150 types of ammunition now locally produced, India is poised to not only meet its own demands but also contribute significantly to the global market. This move will not only save billions annually but also enhance India's stature as a key player in the international defense industry. Kudos to the Indian Army for this strategic leap towards self-sufficiency and potential global leadership in ammunition manufacturing! 🇮🇳💪 #SelfSufficientIndia #DefenseInnovation

I wonder if anyone has seen Sharukh's Jawan movie 🤔

SAURABH SINGH this is much needed move. I was talking to high grade officer they said make in India in defense is best thing because at crisis situation we can't be on mercy of some other country. Because not only they will seek their interest first but can surely overcharge many times, we still need to follow.

With all the IITs and NITs it's surprising that we still can't even make a bullet. Really wondering what's the use of IITs and NITs. Is it produce employees for MNC companies?
