A recent study of n=8,010 adults without HTN, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found higher flavonoid intake was associated with prevalence of hypertension. Noticeably, two flavonoids: anthocyanin and flavan-3-ols were found to be negatively associated with prevalence of hypertension (38% and 21% reduction in risk of hypertension respectively when comparing higher intake to the lowest intake). As potent antioxidants, flavonoids were believed to protect the vascular system, reduce inflammation, and oxidative stress in the body. They are most abundantly found in fruits and vegetables like berries. Balancing our diet with adequate and a variety of flavonoids-rich produce can help maximize their cardio-protective potentials. #flavonoids #anthocyanin #flavan3ols #hypertension.
