Are children's sweetness preferences and sweetness liking influenced by repeated exposure to sweetness? This is a question often asked but less studied. The study showed that 14 exposures to a sucrose-containing sweet or sour-tasting drink did not affect sweetness preference or liking in 4-7-year-old children. 🌟 Exciting News! 📚 My latest paper has just been published! Many thanks to my co-authors and supervisors Gertrude Zeinstra, Gerry Jager, and Ciaran Forde for all the work and support! 🌱 I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our understanding of children's taste preferences and how they are influenced. If you would like to delve deeper into our research, you can find the full study here: https://lnkd.in/eDJbSFRm In this RCT, we investigated the effects of exposure to a sugar-containing sweet or sweet-sour drink on sweetness preference and liking in 4-7-year-old children. Here's a brief overview of our findings: 🔍 Study Design: 65 children were randomized into three groups, each receiving daily exposure to either a sweet drink, sour drink, or water (control group) for 14 days. Their preferred level of sweetness and how much they like sweet and sweet-sour products were measured right before and after the intervention, as well as 3 months later. 📈 Results: We found no effect of repeated sweetness exposure on sweetness preference or liking after the study or at the 3-month follow-up. ❗Limitations: Similar to other human studies, our study has its weaknesses - for example, the intervention may have been too short to induce changes (for more details - see the limitations in the study 📚) 💡 Nevertheless, our results point to a similar narrative to other work on this topic: repeated sugar consumption does not appear to be related to children's sweetness preference or liking. So, when we think about how to reduce children's sugar consumption, those aspects don't seem to play too much of a role. ➡Other factors, such as the environment, may have a much greater influence on sugar intake #Research #ChildrensHealth #TastePreferences #NewPaperPublished
