A common novice investor mistake is to not properly consider its relative valuation, compared to others. Example: an investor may acclaim his stock/company pick is superior because it has a higher growth rate, higher profit margins, better future prospects...etc.  But then not take into account that it also has a far higher p/e, besides low dividend yield, hence this is so already priced in!  It is like saying a BMW car is better than a Ford, true. But then not even consider that the BMW selling price is often double, compared to a Ford.

Stock Buybacks are NOT a return of "cash" to shareholders... 1. Shareholder Composition Changes When a company buys back its stock, it is purchasing shares from those shareholders who choose to sell. This means that only the selling shareholders directly receive cash, while the remaining shareholders' stake in the company increases proportionally. Therefore, not all shareholders receive cash directly. 2. Indirect Benefits Shareholders who do not sell their shares may benefit indirectly from the buyback through an increase in the value of their remaining shares. The reduced number of shares outstanding typically leads to higher earnings per share (EPS) and potentially a higher stock price. However, this is an indirect benefit and not an immediate return of cash. 3. Tax Implications Dividends are a direct way of returning cash to shareholders and are usually subject to tax at the time they are received. Stock buybacks, on the other hand, might result in capital gains for the shareholders who sell their shares, which are typically taxed differently. This distinction in tax treatment can influence the net benefit to shareholders and the timing of the tax liability. 4. Capital Allocation Signal A buyback can signal to the market that the company's management believes the stock is undervalued. While this can boost shareholder value, it is more about perception and market signaling than directly returning cash. 5. Potential for Misuse There are concerns that companies might use buybacks to artificially inflate their stock price or earnings per share metrics, which can benefit executives with performance-based compensation. This use of capital does not necessarily equate to creating long-term shareholder value. 6. Opportunity Cost Money used for buybacks could have been deployed elsewhere, such as investing in growth opportunities, paying down debt, or paying dividends. Depending on the company's situation and market conditions, buybacks might not always be the best use of capital for enhancing shareholder value. 7. Market Perception The perception of buybacks can vary. Some investors may view them as a positive signal of confidence, while others may see them as a lack of better investment opportunities within the company. This subjective interpretation means that the effectiveness of buybacks in "returning value" can be debated. While buybacks do distribute cash to the shareholders who sell their shares, usually insiders, they do not directly return cash to all shareholders equally. The benefits to remaining shareholders are more indirect and dependent on market conditions, tax considerations, and the company’s future performance.
