$35k for keyword research. $50k monthly retainer for SEO reporting. $5k for guest posts on no-name sites. I just saw these prices in an SEO proposal a startup shared with me. Too many companies are being ripped off by agencies because they just don't know any better. There are so many great agencies out there; don't use one that doesn't help you hit your goals. Holy cow. 35,000 for Keyword research? 350 hours or 45 business days of work at $100 an hour? To research and find keywords your clients customers are using? Thats a lot. Better to put that into placements and content and get them more customers so you can charge more but ethically.

In Australia, a company I worked for paid $1 million per month for SEO - some time before I was there. At another, I saw the tail end of the contract for an agency that charged $1 million per year. This can happen if SEO is part of the Marketing arm (rare to find in Australia now) and the marketers are used to paying millions for campaigns.

Good agency should never lock you into contract. I cant even imagine how come these prices even exists. You might have someone full time for that cost in UK

The solution I always recommend is: 1: In-house marketing teams subscribe to SEO tools like Ahref or Semrush to mention a few. This will help reduce your SEO cost. 2: Hire in-house SEO subject matter experts with strategic and revenue optimization experience. 3: Create an hybrid ways of working that integrates seamless collaboration between Agency resources and your in-house SEO team.

😲 Blimey! $50K a month on reporting?!?! That can't be correct. What kind of SEO reports are those??? Wouldn't that be roughly two full-time experienced people doing only reporting all month??

It's important to distance yourself from these types of practices, I know first hand. The best option is to take a seasoned marketer and have them guide the company in building an internal team. I have hired, fired, and worked for agencies for 10 years. There isn't much good left. Unless..... I should start one to fix the problem, forget about all the lessons I learned, be disorganized, compromise on protocol, treat customers poorly, become greedy, and fail. The exact words of marketing agencies everywhere.
