The metaphor of “a walk in the park” implies that something is simple and easy; however, the neuroscience involved in such an activity is incredibly complex and relatively unstudied. This complexity is most evident in the context of movement disorders such as PD, where current therapies struggle to address the movement issues associated with the condition. 🔬 Rodrigo Manuel Paz, PhD, recipient of our Postdoctoral Fellowship for Basic Scientists, has focused on a specific region of the brain crucial for walking. He'll be devoting his research to better understanding how it works, and how novel therapies can better treat people with Parkinson's. Combing local and system brain info to advance brain care: This NIH grant mechanism supports research involving both intra-cranial recordings and neuroimaging, a needed integrated approach to build the needed bedrock for better solutions in clinical neuroscience. Information from both neuroimaging and intra-cranial recordings provides a larger systems neuroscience picture and a finer detailed view about smaller brain regions of interest. One could ask how stimulating one brain area affects other areas with this approach. This could be important to know in creating brain implants to address serious brain disease. Why? Many devastating brain diseases continue to be poorly addressed by current treatments, leading to this inclusion of intra-cranial recordings as an emphasized method here if neuroethic requirements are met. Functional brain regions are organized in networks, so knowing the full effect of stimulating one area includes how that stimulation influences brain activity elsewhere. Science Career Implications: This research program highlights why education and specialty training in science must include team assignments as most areas of science are now team sports. Learning how to work well with others includes planning ahead so effort invested and later credit given are matched across team members. Setting up win-win-win plans before the work starts can help avoid conflicts later.

‘Did I lock the door properly’ Questions like such won’t pop in your head anymore because there’s an exciting breakthrough in neuroscience!     Scientists from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and USC have achieved a remarkable feat: using a neural prosthetic device to recall specific memories for the first time. This groundbreaking research, published in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, builds on their previous success in implementing a prosthetic system that leverages a person's own memory patterns to enhance memory encoding and recall.  Some points worth noticing    - Successful trials have been conducted with human participants.  - The study involved 14 adults diagnosed with epilepsy and these individuals were part of a diagnostic brain-mapping procedure.  - Surgically implanted electrodes helped locate their seizures.  - Targeted electrical stimulation occurred in the hippocampus region.    This research opens new avenues for understanding memory and could lead to innovative treatments for memory-related disorders. Synopsis - The Low Vision Symposium provides the venue to link the latest scientific discoveries in low vision research to innovative interventional procedures for the management of low vision. Starting from the assessment of the behavioural consequences of low vision, the symposium will highlight the neuropsychological aspects affected by low vision, the modifications in the brain dynamics brought by low vision, up to the current and exploratory clinical protocols to treat the different deficits associated with low vision. Talks will be given in English. The symposium ends with the attribution of a Young Investigator Award to the best student presentations in human vision neuroscience, neuro-ophthalmology, or any related discipline.

Last week, during The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine event "Engaging Scientists in Shared Responsible Innovation in Neuroscience in Southeast Asia," IoNx Director Karen Rommelfanger spoke on a panel about Emerging Research and Developments in Neuroscience. We are reminded that neuroscience is truly a global effort that benefits from research taking place in locales around the globe.
