𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀. 2️⃣ This recent wave of coups is something the EU needs to deal with, as coups are by definition 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 and threats to the rule of law. So far, the EU has 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀. 3️⃣ For the future, the EU needs to decide more clearly and strategically 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 and with whom it is willing to collaborate while looking beyond a lens of great-power competition. Dr Andriy Tyushka, Senior Research Fellow in the European Neighbourhood Policy Chair at the College of Europe in Natolin, has published a co-authored policy study, with Prof. Tracey German from the Defence Studies Department at King's College London, titled ‘Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan and the Kyiv Security Compact – An assessment’. This in-depth analysis (IDA) scrutinizes the different proposals that have been put forward by Ukraine and other actors (including China, Indonesia, and a group of African countries), their visions of ending the Russo-Ukrainian war as well as their visions for the post-war future of Ukraine and the European security order. It concentrates on the following questions: what are the varying assumptions about the preconditions for peace versus ceasefire? Moving beyond the grey zone: The case for ICAD ADAM LOCKYER , YVES-HENG LIM , COURTNEY J FUNG 17 Jul 2024  Why some Indo-Pacific nations are renaming the place between peace and war. A more accurate labelling of PRC behaviour permits sharper thinking about appropriate, proportional, calibrated and coordinated responses. If an action is deemed illegal, then it can trigger the use of appropriate multilateral legal measures. If an act is deemed coercive or aggressive, then it can trigger alliance and security partnership agreements. If it is deemed deceptive, then it requires the international community to investigate. In short, the mere existence of the term can shape narratives to deter future transgressions. Regional responses to coercive acts become more likely and, potentially, more costly to the perpetrator. Beijing seems to be worried about the new ICAD term and narrative that is gaining popularity in the Philippines and beyond. The Global Times, a PRC government mouthpiece, has already attempted to seize back the narrative with an opinion piece titled “Who is ‘illegal, coercive, aggressive, deceptive’ in the South China Sea?” .

🧐Did you know The UN has the authority to hold emergency sessions under Resolution 377, in cases of genocide and war crimes. Resolution 377, commonly known as the "Uniting for Peace" resolution, was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950 as a means to address situations in which the Security Council is unable to act due to a lack of consensus among its permanent members. The resolution was a response to the Soviet Union's repeated use of its Security Council veto to block action in the Korean War. Under Resolution 377, if the Security Council is deadlocked and unable to act, the General Assembly can convene an emergency session to consider the matter and make recommendations for collective action to maintain international peace and security. This resolution effectively allows the General Assembly to take over the functions of the Security Council when it is unable to fulfil its responsibilities. The "Uniting for Peace" resolution has been invoked several times in the history of the United Nations, notably during the Suez Crisis and the Hungarian Revolution. It provides a mechanism for the international community to address urgent crises when the Security Council is unable to do so. By enabling the General Assembly to step in and make recommendations for action, Resolution 377 serves as an important safeguard against the paralysis of the Security Council and ensures that the United Nations can continue to fulfil its mandate to maintain international peace and security. #civicengagement #policychange 12-10-23 @12:34 AM EST

This is a smart move by the Philippines. What better way to contain China’s bullying in the West Philippine Sea than inking a security pact with another powerful nation: France. The Philippines’ back-up forces now include the United States, Australia, and most recently France. As well as others who are benefited by the 2016 Tribunal Ruling which favored the Philippines’ claim over China’s. That Arbitral ruling is actually a victory for international law upholding the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. It ruled that no country can unilaterally violate the exclusive economic zone of another country. Implicitly, it also upheld all other provisions of the UNCLOS which allow freedom of navigation through international waters and air space. The South China Sea has become today’s flashpoint like no other.
