Morning News Anchor | Building Authentic Connections with Diverse Audiences

With my job hunt now underway - it would probably help to explain *why I'm job hunting. Spectrum has ended its local morning shows across the state and moved to a statewide format. As a result, my position is being eliminated. The video that accompanies this post is my on-air goodbye. A lot of people have asked if I’m angry about this decision. And the answer is – no. This is a business decision in an industry facing severe challenges. Much like the internet did to newspapers, streaming is starting to chip away at TV news. I can’t blame a company that’s doing what it thinks will help it survive. While I’m not angry – I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t heartbroken. If you know me, you know this was all I ever wanted to do. I’ve been a working journalist for 26 years, starting at age 17. I’ve been on TV for 23 years. I’ve anchored the mornings in Buffalo for one month shy of 12 years. This job has become an integral part of my identity and how I see the world. A decade ago, the path forward would be simple: find another anchor job in Buffalo or in another market. Only, it’s not that simple anymore. My family is happily settled in Western New York. Carrie and I built a house here that we love. And our 7-year-old son Ethan is thriving in school. Lancaster offers an amazing special education system and there’s no way we would remove him from that. A new anchor job in this market would almost certainly include weekends. Which would mean time away from Carrie and Ethan. The three of us treasure our time together – and I’m very aware that Ethan only grows up once. I’m not going to miss that time.  So as much as I love my profession, the truth is I love my family even more. Never say never – maybe something can work out. But in all likelihood it looks like I’ll have to find something outside of the business. And while that saddens me greatly – all I have to do is look at my son to know I’m making the right decision. If you’ve ever worked with me at various stations over the years – thank you. If you’ve ever supported me through the years during this journey – thank you. And if you’ve ever taken time to watch me on your TV – thank you most of all. As much fun as this career has been – and as “cool” as it is to be on TV – in the end it’s always been about serving the viewers. Carrie is always uncomfortable when viewers approach me in the supermarket to say hi. But I never have been. As I said in my TV goodbye – it shows that I made some small degree of difference in their day. There’s no greater career reward than that. I’ll be sure to share what the future holds as soon as I know. And please reach out if you know of any opportunities for a seasoned communications professional!

Without a doubt you are one of the finest people I've ever had the privilege of working with - hands down. Any company/business would be so lucky to have you on its team. Whatever is going to be the best situation for you and your precious family, will eventually work out. And it will hopefully not require you to wake up in the middle of the night. And just so you know ... Mrs. and I will be forever grateful to you for helping me with my "congratulatory excitement."

Good luck, Scott. Spectrum is in big trouble anyways, as is linear TV. Look to the digital side of media and you'll thrive!

I can relate and know it is tough, especially when a company makes a decision to downsize, and your career is part of what defines you. Check out opportunites in PR as many of us who worked in media, have made the switch. Wishing you the best.

You were great at Spectrum and I know you’ll do the same at WIVB. Congrats Scott. 😀
