The first night of any conference is arguably the most important, for two reasons: 1. You can meet people who become your conference buddies. 2. You can find out what everyone else is up to for the rest of the week. Which after-parties is everyone headed to? Which sessions are everyone talking about? My unsolicited advice: if you can muster the social energy, try going to multiple events in a night.
