🌴 Since 2014, ASI has been responsible for overseeing the work of Certification Bodies for the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a partnership that contributes to sustainable palm oil production. Over the past 20 years, #RSPO has united to transform the global palm oil sector. This initiative is inspired by our shared vision of a sustainable industry that benefits people, safeguards the planet, and promotes prosperity for rural communities worldwide. We join RSPO in celebrating the significant milestones of the past two decades – from conserving over 360,000 hectares to date under RSPO Principles and Criteria Certification, to remediating over 100,000 hectares of land and improving the lives of over half a million workers in the global palm oil industry under the RSPO certification system. Given our mutual commitment to fostering stronger partnerships, we are enthusiastic about building on our progress and driving a more sustainable future. The REACH revision, outlined in the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS), promises substantial benefits for human health, the environment, the circular economy, and European industrial competitiveness and innovation. This revision focuses on streamlining hazardous chemical restrictions, strengthening authorization systems, enhancing hazard information requirements, including polymers in registrations, and enforcing REACH provisions for more effective substance classification. Delaying this proposal would expose workers, consumers, and the environment to potentially harmful chemicals, impacting the EU's global market leadership, while the timely implementation of the REACH revision aligns with Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring safer chemical use and benefiting society and the environment. The urgency for the European Commission to publish the REACH revision is critical. Such timely action will safeguard health, provide industry predictability, contribute to the EU's sustainability goals, and avoid potential market share loss to global competitors. Implementing a phased approach, starting with the core legislative text and then addressing annex revisions separately, could expedite the necessary changes, ensuring that the core aspects are swiftly revised while leveraging specialized expertise for more intricate scientific decisions. With the clock ticking and the Von der Leyen Commission's term ending in 2024, the importance of proposing the REACH revision cannot be overstated, as its benefits outweigh the costs and further delays pose risks to human health, the environment, and hinder the transition to safer, sustainable chemicals.

🌍 Calling all NGOs and civil society representatives! ISO international workshop on sustainable critical mineral supply chains 📅 16 and 17 April 2024 in New York, USA. For those unable to join in person, some sessions will be available in hybrid format. This workshop is part of a series of workshops aiming to throw light on the environmental, social, and governance principles in existing sustainability frameworks, guides, and standards which have gained acceptance across various regions and jurisdictions. There are a wide range of sustainability services and frameworks available to industry provided by third parties. These sustainability frameworks may differ and overlap in areas. This can increase complexity and create difficulties for those seeking to select the most appropriate tool. As Europe shifts to safer and more sustainable chemicals, it is crucial for industry to understand which chemicals may require a deeper hazard and risk analysis. Who else is heading to The Sustainable Palm Oil Dialogue Europe 2024? In the 16 years I've been working in #Sustainablepalmoil, this will be the first time I've headed to mainland Europe for a conference. Really looking forward to meeting Conal Judd-English and Rose McCulloch from Efeca | B Corp certified 2023 in person, and catching up with Lior Torenberg and Geza Toth, Ph.D. from CarbonSpace. Also keen to see Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)'s prisma system in action - could be incredibly useful for businesses that need to comply with EUDR and UKDD.
