A recent study of several seafood supply chains by researchers from the Institute for Global Food Security in the School of Biological Sciences at Queens University Belfast found that third-party certification is the most important factor in ensuring a company’s defense against food fraud. Certified companies have more robust control measures than their uncertified counterparts for over 80% of fraud factors. Whether certifying your own company or working through a certified supplier, these verifications were found to have the greatest influence on reducing an organization’s seafood fraud vulnerability. At SCS Global Services, we provide a comprehensive suite of assurances to support environmental sustainability, social responsibility, seafood safety, and climate efforts. Our certification programs we offer include: • Seafood Chain of Custody (MSC, ASC, RFM) • Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Fair Trade USA certification for fisheries • Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) for farms • BRCGS, SQF Institute, GMP and other schemes for seafood safety • Carbon assessment, verification, and accounting For more information on the certifications we offer, visit our website. https://hubs.la/Q02FHwxq0 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ePDBJ_X4 #SIMP #seafoodsafety #seafoodfraud #IUU #seafoodlovers #sdg #sustainableseafood

Important reporting on the absence of seafood from Westminster food security debates in Fishing News last week: https://lnkd.in/eRYZG5p9 Disappointing, but not surprising, to hear that seafood, fisheries and aquaculture are being systematically ignored in debates and policy about food security. It's a long-term trend that we discussed in a working paper 'What about seafood?' recently published by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and Marine Conservation Society. What would it take to put seafood back on the policy menu in the UK? Stronger lobbying? More research and evidence? Different policies? We have some ideas brewing but it would be great to hear what others think. Christian Reynolds Jack Clarke Annabelle Bladon Alejandro Guarín Anna Ducros José Morell-Ducós

Given that #farmedseafood has had public issues with regard to the environment and food safety in the past, misinformation and misconceptions have run rampant, resulting in confusion and a lack of confidence in buying and eating seafood. To clarify the most common myths and misconceptions about aquaculture, GSA has compiled a list of widespread myths about farmed seafood. Much progress towards sustainability has been made throughout the industry over the past few decades, however, as with every industry, there is room for improvement. GSA has created these resources as a means for consumers to feel more educated about their seafood choices. Want to learn more? 'As per our normal procedures, the [federal] department [of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry] will seek assurances from China that cooking oils exported to Australia are safe for consumption. 'Importers will also be advised to seek assurances from suppliers. There are no import bans currently in place for cooking oil from China. 'That's the vulnerability: if you don't actually have your own national testing systems, but the companies working in China take shortcuts, the world is then exposed'. Mate, it's the PRC: this thing is merely another thing they seek to weaponise (like fentanyl and precursor chemical exports) to harm foreign populations who don't kowtow. It's long past time we woke up and stopped relying on market forces (sorry, 'assurances') to prevent our people from getting poisoned by a government which is quite happy to threaten the physical safety of our navy divers and our aviators in international waters and airspace. https://lnkd.in/gYEfWeCh

In 2023, Nofima, the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Research carried out a study of farmed salmon fed feed incorporating Aquaterra omega-3 oil, which contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids traditionally sourced from wild-caught fish. Nofima found that salmon fed Aquaterra were healthier than those fed only standard plant oil, and had better coloration, showing a reduction in the prevalence and severity of dark melanin spots in the filets. Shortly after the study was published, Aquaterra was approved for use in salmon feed by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. We want to thank AquaFeed for bringing attention to Nofima's study, which highlighted the potential of Aquaterra as a key new source of omega-3 for use in fish feeds, and for discussing the need for the aquaculture industry to continue developing, exploring, and utilizing such alternative omega-3 sources. #aquaculture #omega3 #sustainability

When this fair was established, it attracted many merchants in the seafood industry including exporters and importers to gather here to look for each other as well as to "SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE? " But then, especially when COVID swept through, it cooled down the picture that Vietnamese exporters had painted for VIETFISH, the fair became "emptier" than in previous years. Exporters such as India, Indonesia, Korea, etc. are more present than importers coming to find quality and reputable supplies. Take a typical example: MEKSEA is the Platinum sponsor for Vietfish over many years and has invested extremely grandly in its booth, but the rate we welcome customers has gradually decreased. But that's not why we feel "bored" with VIETFISH, but it is the motivation for us to spread more to the international seafood community and say: Please come here, even though you have never been here before. never been intention but try coming here once, you will feel "it is true that the country is one of the top seafood exporters in the world", they have a variety of seafood products, especially nutritional value products extremely high but the price is extremely suitable. This is where you can find items that you "intended" to sell but didn't know where to start. This is where you can connect with "REAL" and "REPUTABLE" exporters instead of having to find these things on the INTERNET, but it brings many risks because it is impossible to authenticate the person sitting in front of the computer screen that we're working - "Who are they?"
