HOW HAVE I CHANGED AFTER BECOMING A SEAFARER? Before becoming a seafarer: - Accustomed to land based life style. - Didn't know much about life at sea. - Might not be familiar with how things work on ships. - Lack of discipline. June 25th is International 'Day of the Seafarer'. It is not lost upon those of us in the maritime industry that many go unnoticed in this profession . Those reading this - know that no matter what your career or standing in life - that you are connected to this industry in almost all parts - from the goods that you wear, eat, drive, build and otherwise consume. Without seafarers and professional mariners, the term 'global trade' becomes obsolete. Many of our seafarers work in conditions that would shock you, treated in such a way that they are merely a consumable product themselves. As representatives of an industry who have seen what can be a good, productive and rewarding career at sea - we will always stand up and speak for those that are not as fortunate as us, but still significantly contribute to our profession. We're celebrating Seafarers' Day, and it's a big day, not just for them, but for all of us. They may be out of sight, but they definitely shouldn't be out of our minds. Now, you may ask me, why's that? After all, we have a ton of celebratory days dedicated to different kinds of professions. So, what makes this one special? Here's the scoop. Seafarers are the connecting threads in a globalized world. They're the overlooked yet critical patrols of our oceans, the quiet achievers ensuring the steady flow of global trade. Without them, over 80% of international trade would collapse. Yes, you heard it right, 80%! That's how much they impact our lives. But the job is not all sunshine and smooth sailing. They brave the lashes of tempests, the anxiety of separation from loved ones, and the peril of pirates to make sure our lives stay normal.
