Recent OECD - OCDE research - by Orsetta Causa, Maxime Nguyen, Emilia Soldani - based on labour force data from numerous European countries, shows that green and high-polluting jobs are unevenly distributed across socioeconomic groups. Green jobs are linked with higher educational attainment, while high-polluting jobs often involve lower educational attainment. Additionally, women are underrepresented in both sectors. A new report released by Smart Prosperity Institute with Future Skills Centre - Centre des Compétences futures shares the importance of a skilled #workforce in helping #Canada grow its #sustainable #economy. But it will be up to local stakeholders to take the lead and collaborate to ensure the workforce will have the #education and #training to fill these #CleanGrowth jobs that support local economies. Which is why they’ve created a ‘how-to guide’ for groups leading green labour and skills transitions. Center for Market Education CEO, Dr Carmelo Ferlito, cautioned that for the #greeneconomy to be #sustainable in the long run, it needs to be market-driven instead of government-driven. “If what is produced by the green economy is either demanded by the market or the green economy itself can generate its own demand, then we can expect this new frontier to bring benefits to the country in terms of value and job creation. “If, instead, the green economy is sustained by government intervention with support either on the demand or supply side, then it will generate a #bubble,” he said. This bubble will then burst when the support, which he said is not sustainable, is withdrawn. Hence, said Ferlito, the government should be focusing more on a general pro-investment ecosystem, which may eventually foster an environment for the green economy to flourish. https://lnkd.in/gjRWYM4M

By: Josephine Tan | October 18, 2023 Topics: Asia-Pacific | ESG | Learning and Development | News The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has urged Asia-Pacific countries to prepare their workforce for green jobs as the region transitions to a low-carbon economy. In a paper titled Preparing the Workforce for the Low-Carbon Economy: A Closer Look at Green Jobs and Green Skills, the ADB highlighted that new green job opportunities will surface while existing jobs will undergo skills transformation. Therefore, preparing the workforce for these changes stands as a crucial pillar in the transition to a low-carbon economy, necessitating a proactive approach in education systems. The ADB recommended that countries within the Asia-Pacific region embark on country-specific green labour market forecasts and analyses. These insights will serve as guidance for education and workforce planners to anticipate future job trends and the skills required to meet the growing demand for green jobs. Recognising that the adoption of green technology may differ across sectors, the ADB underscored the importance of crafting sector-specific plans for education and workforce development. Such strategic planning, according to the ADB, must involve structured dialogue with industry stakeholders and sector-line ministries. Key partners, in this regard, would encompass sector skills councils and business associations. Countries will also need to update green qualifications and improve the capacity for delivering technical education for green jobs. The ADB said countries need to make teaching sustainability a mindset in primary and secondary education to make it a foundational skill.
