Last month was a whirlwind of unexpected challenges! Nationwide flight cancellations left half our coaching team stranded across the country. To make matters worse, that glitch with Microsoft threatened our payroll operations right before payday. As CEO, it's my responsibility to ensure everyone is paid on time and able to reach their projects. Here's how I tackled the crisis with a military mindset: 1. Stay Calm: Embraced the chaos - "I signed up for this, no room for complaints. These are the moments that inject excitement into business and life!" 2. Communicate Relentlessly: Constant check-ins with my team to navigate their needs and next steps - "Where are you? How can I assist?" 3. Adapt and Strategize: Reassessed our schedules and devised new plans on the fly - "From New Jersey to Louisiana, figuring out how to process payroll without missing my coaching commitments." 4. Trust, Inform and Pray: Kept everyone, including clients, in the loop, trusting that we’ve done our best - "Updated game plans communicated, now it's in Gods hands!" Result? Payroll issues resolved, projects completed, team safely home! My team rallied and we got the job done! Lesson Learned: In the face of adversity, focus and adaptability are key. When I was a kid, I looked up to Grandpa Doug because of his war stories from WW2, and he also built space shuttles and planes at McDonnell Douglas (before it was Boeing). He had an interest in all mechanical and engineering things and I loved hearing Grandpa’s stories! One of FAVORITES was how back in 1983 there was a mid air collision in an American made F15 fighter jet. In the crash the F15 completely lost one of its wings and was sent into a tail spin of death. The pilot could have ejected but was truly unaware of how bad the damage was. As a result, he stayed in the cockpit and focused on landing the plane. He was able to accomplish this by stepping on the gas! The extra thrust helped him pull out of the death spin and keep his plane in the air all the way to the landing. Apparently the pilot was astonished when he saw what he had accomplished! Had he seen the extent of the damage, would he have given up and ejected? There are several powerful lesson here: 1. When things aren’t going right in your life and everything seems to be in a downward spiral, focus on the solution more than the problem. 2. Decide what small steps you can take toward your desired outcome and push forward with everything you have left. 3. You may be struggling, you may be broken, but if you are still breathing you CAN land the plane. You ARE capable of overcoming more adversity than you can ever imagine! As a good parent, we all want our children to be happier and more successful than we are. We strive to shield them from pain and encourage them to surpass our own educational achievements. Yet, the most valuable lessons in life often come from trying new things and, inevitably, from failure. Last semester, my son Jack, who was studying software development, approached me with a concern. He confessed, “Dad, I’ve decided I hate programming and want nothing to do with it. There’s no point in me finishing school for it.” My initial reaction was disappointment, and I was tempted to push him to finish what he started—reflecting my own agenda. Instead, I chose to coach him. Putting aside my fears, I asked him, “Jack, I want you to love coming to work each day. To find that, you might need to try different things. What do you see yourself doing instead?” Jack, grateful for the open discussion, responded with enthusiasm, “I’d like to try working at a car dealership, in the service department!” Knowing the amazing life the auto industry has given our family, I was overjoyed. Moreover, one of our local coaching clients, Don Brown Chevy, offered Jack a position, training him from the ground up in their shop under the guidance of Kevin McGarvey! He even gets to work alongside Don Brown the 3rd as he learns the ropes of the car business! And Jack gets coaching from Justin Dumas! I cannot express how excited this makes me. Jack remains passionate about storm chasing, and I have no doubt he will pursue this in his future. While neither of us knows if the car business is his ultimate calling—his purpose being something he loves, excels at, the world needs, and can provide him with a good living—I am certain he won’t give up until he finds it. Monica and I will be there to support him every step of the way. Lessons learned: We must give our children the freedom to explore, to try new things, and to fail. Letting go of our agendas and supporting their journey not only strengthens our bond but also fosters a long-term, healthy relationship. God bless all the incredible parents out there, the aspiring children seeking their purpose, and the car business! And a heartfelt thank you to Don Brown for embracing Jack as part of your family.
