When I first entered the AdTech space, I was certain of two things: 1.) I wanted to start my own company, and 2.) I didn’t care what industry it would be in. I simply found my way into AdTech because I found an opportunity to advance quickly within a company that *just so happened* to be in the AdTech space. After completing my PhD and leaving academia, I oriented my career towards a single goal: I wanted to learn to become a great manager so I could eventually start my own company. The interesting thing about this is that optimizing for one factor requires you to be flexible with several other factors. I chose my desired outcome (start a company) and the skillset I wanted to develop (becoming a great manager), but I didn’t choose my path to get there. I think the same principle of choice flexibility applies to all parts of life. Be disciplined in what you’re optimizing for and be flexible with everything else.

Scoop: Quite a few strange things have happened in 2024 so far, but I didn't have this potential adtech tie-up on my bingo card. I'm hearing Outbrain has emerged as a frontrunner to acquire, merge, or otherwise invest in Altice's video-focused adtech company Teads.
