Good luck to Tom Bishop, taking on his first long course race in the Netherlands this weekend. Tom said: "My motivation was quite low after a DNF due to a flat tyre, then I missed a bit of training due to illness, but last week I got back into it. Overall I'm going into Almere quite fresh, which is how I've been told is best to approach a long distance race. The fitness is there, I've done so much training over the year including an altitude camp. Really, I'm going there to experience a long course race, I've never done one before. I'm looking forward to seeing how it feels; everyone says it's a different style of racing to middle distance and short course which are supposed to be similar in intensity but long course is completely different. I'm still confident and optimistic - my plan is to swim near the front although there's a few really quick swimmers, get out on the bike and push pretty hard, take each hour as it comes. The run is going to be a massive unknown, I've never run anywhere near the distance - I think the longest run I've done is just over 30k and nowhere near a marathon, especially after the bike it's going to be something really interesting. NEW PAPER ALERT! Alpine skiing has an interesting feature according to which coaches of national teams set the course (gates) of the race. Over the years many people speculated whether or not this helps the racers whose coach set the course. In my new paper published in the Journal of Economic Psychology (co-authored by Christoph Bühren from Ruhr-University Bochum and Martin Gschwend from the University of St. Gallen), we analyzed 45,467 men’s and 41,221 women’s performances from all competitions in alpine skiing’s Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super Giant disciplines that took place in the World Cups, World Championships, and Olympic Games between the 2001/2002 and 2019/2020 seasons. We found that having a compatriot course setter only has an effect in the second (and decisive) run of the most technical discipline Slalom. More specifically, men fail significantly MORE often to complete their run when their compatriots set the course, whereas women fail significantly LESS in the same situation. The most likely drivers of our results relate to gender differences in response to expectations and choking under pressure in skill-based tasks. #sport #skiing #psychology #choking #pressure #sportmanagement #sportsbiz
