As we savor the final weeks of summer, we’re celebrating with fresh fruits and melons! 🌽🍉 Recently at Mexican Heritage Plaza, we shared our Refreshing Watermelon Corn Salad, and our team member, Nicole, connected the community with valuable Food as Medicine resources. Together, we’re nourishing our neighbors and fostering health through good food. #50YearsofNourishment

👋 Hi, community. Grateful to my editor Kate Bernot for understanding my vision for this article! An excerpt: "Thirst is a tangible need. Humans can only survive without water for about three days. How long can you go without seeing another person? Perhaps by seeing each other, we are better able to see ourselves. Water’s emergence as a hospitality tool feels like some form of self-preservation: Meeting these small needs for others can help us to begin to make meaning of our own humanity."

Someone once told me the below (can’t remember who!) and in this moment, it seems appropriate to resurface the expression 😂🤭 It is extremely important to look at consumer feedback. It helps in identifying consumer needs and with future activity planning. But it’s a key skill to identify what would suit your organisation. It helps to imagine the business as a pizza, and it’s offerings as individual toppings 🍕 The premise of the saying is, that if you looked at every single bit of feedback and acted upon it, just imagine it’s a bit like you adding another, different topping to the pizza. Make sure it compliments your base, pre-existing toppings and crusts! As otherwise, by the end of it, your pizza would taste incredibly unpleasant! It has been great to see the tongue-in-cheek nature of how one of our reviews/ the response of it has gone viral, receiving several national pieces. We try and respond to every single review we receive as it’s important to see the good, bad and the ugly! I have loved reading the really positive comments from the media and previous visitors in response to the interesting review we received last week - which left us a little bit confused on how to respond! If you fancy a giggle, check out one of the pieces below 👇

At Alimentando al Pueblo, we have been working on building the infrastructure for a Latino food system; building relationships with and making some financial investments (via purchases) into small businesses in our Community. Our food system looks VERY different than the traditional one. We are working on bringing along businesses in understanding what currently exists, and what we are wanting to co-create and build with them. We are engaging them in a practice of imagining and dreaming with us. You know, cultivating a Community of Imagination (one of our values). We are working on some communciations materials and it came to a place of needing to define what this Latino food system is; because while we are wanting a "food system, but Latino" it is so much more than that. Shoutout to my gift of word for this definition: A Latino food system is a network of Latino businesses, Community organizations and members that engage in cultural practices, deepen relationships and create processes to ensure our Communal ecosystem has access to our cultural foods, belonging, and economic viability. The blueprint for this is here. Burien. PNW. What an honor to steward this alongside my brilliant Community.

In August, we're organizing our monthly discussion in #nature! 🌳 Join us on Ada Ciganlija on August 18 from 6 p.m. We'll be in a small meadow near the Ada Safari restaurant! Bring water, mosquito repellent and a mat or blanket to sit on the grass, so we can have a real picnic experience🧺☕️🍄 while discussing this month's topics: 1. How important is work on public policies and should EA be more involved in that sphere? 2. Why are friendships important, how do they develop and where do they come from? See you then! 🌞

It's September! 🍃 And as the seasons change, so does the posting schedule: our #ThrowbackThursday is usually an Insta exclusive, but today we're bringing it to you too! 🐦 Don't forget to follow us on the 'Gram for more regular resilience tips and tricks – all with a retro twist... So, ‘tis autumn… the season of nostalgia, honestly! 🍂 And what better way to kick off the month than among the bramble bushes, already bursting with berries? 😋 After all, it never hurts to start filling that pantry ahead of time… It’s very important, of course, to know what you’re looking for - a blackberry is easy enough to identify, but elderberries or beechnuts may prove trickier to pick out for the beginner 🍄🟫 And for goodness’ sake don’t go looking for mushrooms unless you’re a seasoned expert… 🍄 Check out FALLING FRUIT to find and map the urban harvest near you! If you’re in the Cambridge area, you could also check out our friends at Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC 🫐 Not only did they go bananas with their wild fruit picking last Saturday, but they’re collecting surplus fruit from people’s gardens till September 10th - get in touch if you’ve any to give! 🍎 Because after that comes the jam… Jams, chutneys, pickles, and sauces of all kinds are a staple of British food - designed to make the most of the harvest and to get people through hard times, from the dark days of winter to wartime rationing 🥫You can’t go wrong with a basic pickle or preserve recipe - just remember to sterilise the jar and pop your precious purée in while it’s still hot 🍯 Perfect: you’ll thank me come Christmas! #resilienceweb #cambridge #cambridgeresilienceweb #community #communityresilience #foraging #apples #foragesafely #foodwaste #urbanharvest #socialjustice #climatejustice #blackberries #jammaking #pickling #preserving #retro #blitzspirit #vintage #canning #vintagestylenotvintagevalues #costofliving #autumn

Our plans for a Uist Community Food Hub are underway!! We want to create a welcoming community space in Benbecula where we grow, cook, eat and share food together and be an incubator site for training and knowledge so that we can create a resilient local food system that benefits everyone in the community. Imagine local food markets and food festivals; kids and adults growing veggie plants together; young and old cooking and preparing food for vulnerable people in our community. Imagine a refillery, imagine cooking demonstrations by some our fabulous chefs on the island or learn how to cook on a budget. Imagine sitting around having a blether over a cuppa or watching a climate inspiring film projected on a 12 metre wall which has a mural designed by local kids. The first step to creating something is to imagine it. If we can imagine a safer, greener, fairer future we can make it happen. Imagine - Create - Share. https://lnkd.in/e_wQtFK2
