We all remember the days of surviving on instant noodles in college, a nostalgic memory for many. However, college hunger today is a serious issue affecting more students than ever before. Did you know that from 1980 to 2019-20, the total cost of attending a four-year college full-time increased by a staggering 180% on an inflation-adjusted basis according to the National Center for Education Statistics? This rise in costs has contributed to a concerning increase in food and housing insecurity among college students, particularly in California. A recent survey by the California Student Aid Commission revealed alarming statistics: - More than two-thirds of students surveyed identified as food insecure. - Over half reported being housing insecure. - Students with low incomes, students of color, and adult learners showed higher rates of basic needs insecurity. Second Harvest of Silicon Valley partners with local community colleges and San Jose State University to ensure students have access to the nutritious food essential for their academic success.
