6 am is the best time… for sleep 😅, but today was something better. I did a financial workshop for FIRSTPICK startups. We had a great time discussing fundraising, financial planning, and burn rate challenges with the founders. I can’t be the only one who’s sensing a little frustration with LLMs creeping into the investor and startup communities. A lot of money is going into ventures based on them, but the big returns people had hoped for haven’t really materialized. I recently put out a post about why building on a big LLM can be problematic. That’s one reason why the outcomes of LLM-based ventures have disappointed. I think the other is that it takes huge amounts of money to build and run conventional LLMs, and a few big players have already cornered that market. I don’t think this means that we should be turning our backs on LLMs in droves, though. I’ve seen some promising AI-based ventures out there that have built lean and niche LLM-like products that do one job and do it well. The building costs of these are lower, and because they’re designed to fit a niche, they can do specialized tasks that the big, generalist LLMs (or platforms built on them) can’t do. Less than a year ago, RiSC made a successful exit from Semantic Health, which uses AI to extract billable procedures from hospital records. What Semantic Health’s founders did is an early example of what I think is the way forward for startups whose products need the power of the big LLMs without the risks and costs. #technology #deeptech #techstartups
