I learned about the Carolyn C. Mattingly Award for Mental Health in the Workplace while completing my graduate degree in Health Promotion. A workplace wellness initiative can be SO much more than a 'weight loss competition'. A proper, comprehensive workplace wellness strategy holds massive potential to improve not only the health of your employees, but the overall wellbeing of your communities. After all, your employees are also Moms, Dads, Sisters, Brothers, and often caregivers. The ripple effect of a workplace wellbeing strategy can be profound. World Mental Health Day! Mental Health is one of Phosters (FM) Ltd key priorities as we are firm believers that taking care of our employee’s mental health is just as important as physical health.  We have implemented several initiatives to support and engage our employees in the workplace: Communication: We encourage open and honest conversations about mental health, and feel it is important to engage in key events such as themes like ‘World Mental Health Day’. Resources and Support: Earlier this year, we have invested in an Employee Assistance Programme, where our employees have access to trained professionals. Our aim is to give our employees the support they need. Training: We have a variety of staff from all levels across the organisation trained as Mental Health First Aiders, as well as a designated team of Champions. All managers have to undertake mental health training with the aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment. Most employers increasingly appreciate the importance of creating a wellbeing culture and supporting their employees’ mental health, with the additional benefits for staff performance and retention. Many will showcase mental health initiatives as part of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week. While these campaigns are undoubtedly a positive step, it isn’t always clear how employers should respond to mental health issues which affect an employee’s conduct, performance or absence. To fulfill this duty, create a workplace culture that not only tolerates but also actively encourages discussions about mental health. Health should be a key focus for everybody, both mental and physical health! It was surprising to see that among our 18-24 year olds, 22% say they have long-term mental health conditions, which is much higher than the 8% for all other responses. Many inactive young people would return to work if employers provided mental wellbeing support, so companies and people alike need to do more to build awareness, remove stigmas and provide inclusive environments! As it’s Mental Health Awareness Week… It’s shocking to hear that, according to the DWP, more than 20,000 people in the UK are absent from work every month, as a result of poor mental health. Every company should prioritise the promotion and support of positive mental health in the workplace. The power to effect positive change lies entirely with LEADERS. A positive culture is the foundation of HAPPY employees. Here are a few strategies and considerations that companies can make… 👌 Good access to mental health resources and support systems 👌 Where utilised, more consideration given to ‘performance stats’ for positive reasons (i.e. to notice when someone might be struggling mentally, rather than just to pressure or discipline people!) 👌 Good training for better mental health management, as well as to help people feel better about their work and professional environment 👌 Creating and building a supportive, enjoyable working culture What would you also encourage businesses to consider? #mentalhealth #positivechange #betterleaders
