I recently had the privilege of witnessing a landmark moment in the intersection of control theory and machine learning, as presented by my former PhD advisor, Prof. Miroslav Krstic, in this year’s CDC Bode Lecture titled “Machine Learning: Bane or Boon for Control?”. Prof. Krstic’s lecture delved into the crucial question facing many in our field: How does machine learning reshape the landscape of control theory, long-steeped in first-principles models and designs? His insights into using neural operators for PDE control not only showcased a path forward for integrating these disciplines but also emphasized preserving the stabilization guarantees of existing control methodologies. Prof. Krstic’s lecture underscore a fundamental truth: The fusion of machine learning with traditional control theory isn’t just a possibility; it’s a promising reality, enhancing our tools and methodologies. For those interested in where control theory and machine learning converge, Prof. Krstic’s lecture is a must-watch. It’s a guiding light, showing us how to embrace new technologies while honoring the rich legacy of our field. As someone who has slightly contributed to this groundbreaking work (and graciously mentioned by Prof. Krstic), I’m inspired by how Prof. Krstic is charting a course for the future. His approach of finding “supporting roles” for machine learning in control implementation aligns with the focus of my own presentation. In my talk, I explored the challenges of obtaining PDE backstepping controller or observer gains and proposed a power series method as a practical solution. This method aligns with Prof. Krstic’s vision, bringing simplicity and adaptability to complex control scenarios, and can also help as a tool for generating training sets for neural operators in PDE backstepping. This is what I love about materials science. Anything and everything can be a question to solve, and there's always a new way to look at all of the matter around us- from bug legs to new classes of semiconductors. I am truly honored to be named a "Contributor" to CTU's scholarly journal, The Pinnacle, alongside some real giants: Dr. Leo Lawrence, Al Mummar (Doctoral Candidate), Dr. Jeff Butler, and Dr. Lisa Ratliff-Villarreal. Isaac Newton once penned, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulder of giants." It is from standing on the shoulders of these collective and capable giants that I see; and I am truly humbled. Thank you to these giants for welcoming me to this amazing team, and CTU for encouraging its faculty and its doctoral candidates to collaborate, and publish such potentially impactful research such as this. The research, "A Comparative Study: Deep Learning Approach to Predict Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Based on Q-Chat-10 Responses," sought to unveil novel ways to improve the diagnostic accuracy of existing ASD screening procedures using machine learning, and more specifically, deep learning techniques. It is my sincerest hope that future researchers can leverage and extend this research, and the work of so many other researchers, to improve the healthcare outcomes for those affected by ASD.
