This opinion parallels some of the lessons my partners and I learned in public health while fighting chronic diseases in rural areas. The tools needed to contain or prevent disease work best when they are in the hands of the people directly affected by said diseases. The same idea can be applied to development teams and fundraisers. Foster relationships within the communities that you serve in order to listen to the problems they're facing. Then go find funding and tools to address those issues. Too often we see "best practices", funding, donations, or tool kits pushed down to communities that aren't applicable or helpful... 🌟 Grant Spotlight: $12.6 million to New Incentives to extend and expand its promotion of infant immunization. New Incentives is one of our four top charities, which means it’s one of the giving opportunities we’re most confident in recommending to donors. This #WorldImmunizationWeek we’re shining a light on two high-impact charities tackling what remains a pressing global problem. Every year over 1.5 million people die from vaccine-preventable diseases. In 2022, 20 million children missed out on one or more of the essential vaccines encouraged by the World Health Organization. These charities are extremely cost-effective, working to increase childhood vaccination in areas where coverage is low: 💸 New Incentives uses evidence-based interventions like conditional cash transfers to increase vaccination rates in Nigeria, one of the fastest-growing countries in the world. They’ve enrolled over 3 million infants to date. 📱Suvita uses local immunization ambassadors to educate communities and sends SMS vaccination reminders to caregivers across seven states in India. Both approaches have been rigorously tested, and in combination one trial showed appointment attendance increased by 25% as a result. Last year OT&P Healthcare wrote a short article about Blood donation, this article is still as relevant today. Blood donation is somewhat seasonal in Hong Kong and blood banks are generally short of supplies in the run-up to the Lunar New Year, no change this year, Blood Groups O and A and B there is less than 4 days supply left, this going into a holiday period when there will be no donations. Please, if you are fit and healthy consider to donate blood. We have a population of over 7 million, and understanding young, very old and sick who cant give there are still several million who are eligible to donate. In the Hong Kong Red Cross annual report 2022/2023 only 210, 532 units of blood were donated. One day you or one of your loved ones may need blood. This is my highlight of this piece: "In the longer term, the African region must invest in its own vision for a New Public Health Order for Africa, which has five strategic pillars: strengthened public health institutions; strengthened public health workforce; expanded manufacturing of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics; increased domestic resources for health security, and respectful and action oriented partnerships within Africa and globally.16 This framework will enable Africa to shift from the current global health model based on aid and charity to a paradigm that is rooted in autonomy and self-sufficiency." In the end: the hand that gives will always be above the hand that receives.
