"I know the recruiter didn't review my resume, because they asked me to walk them through my experience." FALSE. We have called you BECAUSE we have reviewed your resume. There are many reasons why recruiters and hiring managers may ask you to do this. 1. We want to hear about your experience in your own words. Recruiters aren't usually as knowledgeable as the candidates we are calling and we want to make sure we don't miss anything for your experience and skills. 2. This is an opportunity to show how you would present yourself in an interview. If you're struggling to speak on your experience, it can raise a red flag that your resume may be a little too enhanced. 3. We want to hear about your passion. If you don't sound excited about your past work experience, we want to know what you're truly looking for in your next career. 4. We may not have the most recent version of your resume. Technology is great, but doesn't always deliver the way we would like for it to. 5. These calls are an opportunity turn a resume into an actual person, and is usually your opportunity for a first impression. A lot of the time, people think they just need help with their resume. Much of the time, it turns out that they first need help thinking through what they want for their career and their life. They need some frameworks, tools, space, and time to process the possibilities. Then, they often need support to craft a narrative that weaves together their lived experience, credentials, skills, etc. so it is a story that people can understand and connect to. In addition, they often need support understanding where to find the types of opportunities they're seeking. Then, they need guidance as they practice employing best practices, so they can spend less time scrolling job boards and more time engaged in life-giving activities, like meeting people who share their interests. This more proactive, intentional approach helps them get off the emotional roller coaster that so often accompanies job searches and career changes. Then it's often valuable to have support preparing for interviews and negotiations. And yes, help with resumes from a professional often is also key for an effective search. But there's typically a lot more than a resume that needs attention. So, before you rush to assume that the only issue is your resume, I encourage you to recognize that your resume is one piece of the puzzle. It is not the entire puzzle. Do you even need a resume in 2024? This is a question I have been asked by a number of people as in many cases all the information can be found on an individuals Linkedin profile so why do I need to put it on a resume as well? The argument I often hear is that I am not really looking for a role but if something really good comes up then I am willing to hear about it. What really good translates to normally is a large increase in pay or career progression. If the above is one of your goals you are definitely going to need a well written up to date resume and I would recommend updating it every quarter. Firstly, it is a tool to showcase your skills and achievements but probably more importantly it demonstrates both commitment and a level of pride that you are taking your career seriously. It can display a level of attitude that employers want to hire. If candidates are slow or not keen to put a resume together they more often than not go on the low-priority list. Over the last few years candidate ability and candidate willingness to move are both viewed equally by recruiters and hiring managers. By not having an up to date resume chances are you may be limiting yourself to lateral moves. i.e working for a competitor in the same capacity. From experience employers are happy to give people a chance to progress their careers but they are looking for that drive from a candidate and having the inclination to keep your resume up to date will definitely give you a greater chance to get in the room and have career defining conversations. #resume #sales #recruitment
