$4.3 Billion Award: Bechtel awarded Train 4 for Nextdecade Read More: https://lnkd.in/gdDjVe3T "HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 5, 2024– NextDecade Corporation (NextDecade or the Company) (NASDAQ: NEXT) announced today that its subsidiary Rio Grande LNG Train 4, LLC (Rio Grande LNG Train 4) has executed a lump sum turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Bechtel Energy Inc. (Bechtel) for the construction of Train 4 and related infrastructure at the Rio Grande LNG Facility. Rio Grande LNG Train 4 agreed to pay Bechtel approximately $4.3 billion for the work under the EPC contract for Train 4. Price validity under the contract extends through December 31, 2024. NextDecade currently projects that owner’s costs, contingencies, financing fees and interest during construction will total approximately $1.7-1.9 billion, based on current estimates and expected interest rates. Total estimated project costs are expected to be $6.0-$6.2 billion for Train 4 and related infrastructure, in line with the per train cost of the three-train Phase 1 at the Rio Grande LNG Facility, which is currently under construction. NextDecade continues to target a positive Final Investment Decision of Train 4 in the second half of 2024, subject to gaining appropriate commercial support and obtaining adequate financing to construct Train 4 and related infrastructure."

According to Underground Infrastructure magazine, the North American pipeline construction outlook for 2024 reveals a strong focus on new LNG terminals that is driving parallel growth in greenfield pipeline projects. Looking globally, nearly 42,000 miles of pipeline were under construction at the start of 2024 with another 80,557 miles in planning stages. This total of 122,552 miles worldwide amounts to a substantial 9.3 percent increase over 2023. Similarly, North America has experienced 9.5% year over year growth in pipeline projects, with 8,689 miles under construction and another 11,143 miles planned at the outset of 2024 for a total of 19,832 miles. In the US, natural gas production growth in the Marcellus and Utica shale remains challenged by pipeline bottlenecks from the region. Several natural gas pipeline projects are in development to connect Haynesville gas producers to Gulf Coast LNG exporters, while Mexico is developing 31 mtpa of LNG export capacity on its west coast. This is welcome news for U.S. natural gas producers, who stand to gain easier access to Asian markets. In Canada, First Nations are beginning to embrace the economic opportunities offered by pipeline and export projects, representing a significant change in the relationship between Canada’s Indigenous leadership and midstream projects. Overall, the North American pipeline construction outlook for 2024 indicates a trend towards a growing demand for LNG, leading to an increase in pipeline projects across the continent. If you're working at an EPC company, you may feel like you're insulated from some of the chaos associated within the oil and gas market. Unfortunately, you're not. As the owner/operators consolidate, they start to exert pressure on their service and design companies to lower their costs. If they've worked with both legacy companies, operators review their contracts, looking for the most favorable terms and rates they have obtained from each organization in an effort to create new contracts which combine the best aspects from each set of agreements. This creates a secondary chain reaction where EPC companies start looking for ways to increase their scale and regain their pricing power. How do they do this? By acquiring other engineering firms so they can push back on the owner operators. The result? If you're working for an EPC company, you could find yourself being acquired by a larger organization which may not match the cultural profile as the best fit for your personality.
