Director of First Impressions! We all know that first impressions are lasting impressions. The role of the Director of First Impressions is crucial in setting the tone for any interaction with customers, residents, or prospects. This title goes beyond just being a receptionist; it signifies the importance of creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere from the moment someone walks through the door. 20 years ago, I walked into a residence up to the reception desk and I saw one of those plaques, you know, the ones that had the receptionist's name on it, and you can slide those in and put the next person's name in when the shift changes over and it says welcome or something along those lines. The title read Director of First Impressions. I thought that her title was really clever and I really appreciated it and it made me smile. She let me know right away that not only was Director of First Impressions written on the side that faced out to the customer, but it was also written on the back of that name plate that faced her. I want to give a shout out to Deb Geerlinks, who taught me that lesson more than 20 years ago, I brought it with me for forever and always in this industry, because I think this one speaks to the culture that we have within our buildings. She didn’t know how to greet me… As a #facilitiesdirector I work with a lot of #tradespeople and #vendors in order to keep the buildings operational. Most of these providers are men. Therefore, I’ve become accustomed to greeting them with a handshake or with a simple hello. There are a lot of people that aside from being men are from different backgrounds that won’t allow or just plainly don’t want to shake hands. I fully #respect, understand and have come accustomed to it. Recently, I met a #femalebusinessowner who plainly stated she didn’t know how to greet me. We’ve met a few times therefore for me, a simple, “hello, how are you”, suffices. For her, since we’ve met multiple times she was welcoming of a hug. In some of our #cultures we are accustomed to greeting with a hug or a kiss on the cheek. However, in a #professional setting it’s always important to keep it just that, “professional”. Don’t get me wrong, I joke around with some of our staff to break the ice or if I see an opportunity to make someone smile, but it’s important to me to have #boundaries and know who I do that with and when. As professionals we have to act differently. We have to adapt to certain situations and see how our actions impact our #relationships and outcomes. Of course, im not telling you what to do, but since this came up and it was something that came so naturally to me, where I didn’t even give it a second thought until it was brought to my attention, I thought I’d share my professional take on it as a woman in a #maledominatedfield. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and place for everything so I don’t discourage this action in all settings, but it’s important to be aware.
