Yesterday I visited BIT Milano, Italy's #tourism trade fair. It was a chance to meet in person with Kino Italy partners and with members of Associazione Italiana Nomadi Digitali, the Italian Digital Nomad Association. Walking through the fair and checking out the booths of different Italian regions, I had the impression that we are anchored to a very traditional way to see tourism and that we are missing out on more innovative trends, like #workandtravel, #remotework and digital nomadism (or at least we are terribly behind). Italy is full of wonders, and tourism is vital to our economy, but we are overlooking innovative models that could impact many sectors, beyond the tourist one. The 'Open to Meraviglia' campaign showcases Italy's legendary beauty by presenting a modern twist on Botticelli's iconic Venus. I couldn't help but wonder: Would this contemporary version of Venus choose Italy as the hub for her digital enterprise, or might she be tempted by destinations that embrace innovation more openly? ------------- Thanks to Maria Scarzella Thorpe, Alberto Mattei, Massimo Ciuffreda, Maurizio Giambalvo, Claudio Paoletti for brainstorming a more innovative future for travel and living in Italy! ------------- The 'Open to Meraviglia' campaign sparked quite a few debates in Italy. Curious to hear from you: what do you think of this ambassador? Tell me in the comments 👇 #italy #tourism #fairtrade #visititaly #futureofwork #futureofliving

Interesting, I do 90% of my yearly contacts with municipalities in the BTL, the Portuguese version of BIT. It’s a good place to open doors and start conversations. We even have a booth with Digital Nomads Association Portugal and get many many contacts. It’s definitely a great way to connect with the tourism boards and operators.

I have worked in travel & tourism for year's and these type of fairs are not always the best place to look for innovation and new trends as government agencies have to support their stakeholders who are the traditional travel trade. It's sometimes easier to get the stakeholders to tell the government agencies what they want or need.

Serena, what a fascinating experience! Italy indeed has a unique mix of beauty and history, ripe for integrating more modern trends like digital nomadism. The 'Open to Meraviglia' campaign sounds intriguing. It makes one think about how countries, especially those with rich histories like Italy, can blend tradition with innovation. Do you see any particular regions in Italy being more open to adopting these newer models of work and travel?

I think Venus looks amazing. Same as Mona Lisa being used in pop culture for a much longer time. It would be interesting to see if people had higher or lower association with Italy before and after the campaign.

Nothing to add really— just want to say you’re asking all the right questions, Serena, and am thankful you’re posting your thoughts.
