One thing to look forward to in monthly GDP figures in 2024 is whether there will be any noticeable impact from the birth of the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Given there are only three teams operating in Canada that played their first twelve home games in January 2024, and the spectator sports component of the performing arts, spectator sports and related industries, and heritage institutions industry (about 0.3% of GDP by industry) is dominated in that time period by the NHL’s seven Canadian teams, the NBA’s Raptors and the three major junior hockey leagues, it may not amount to much yet. Attendance figures in January compared favourably to some of the highest-drawing junior hockey teams, with higher ticket prices.
