#Colombia: Our aid in numbers: In 2023, our efforts made a significant impact in Colombia 🇨🇴, reaching thousands in need. Behind every statistic is a life changed. ➡ 67,075 refugees and residents received medical treatment ➡ 823 people received food assistance ➡ 62,467 refugees benefited from our projects ➡ 32,752 children directly supported In La Guajira, the indigenous Wayuu people face challenges due to drought, poverty, and an influx of Venezuelan refugees. Many lack basic necessities and healthcare access. Through our MAP Salud program, we’re improving healthcare access through mobile clinics that are available for people residing far from conventional health access. We also foster dialogue among indigenous communities, local governments, and healthcare providers through these clinics. Humanitarian response attempts face many challenges and obstacles, but despite all these challenges, grassroots and social initiatives such as emergency rooms, hospices, and charity kitchens - with the support of philanthropists and some organizations - continue to provide food aid to many citizens exposed to hunger and diseases resulting from malnutrition. After 14 months of intense fighting, the situation in #Sudan is dire: 25.6 million people face crisis levels of food insecurity, meaning these households are skipping meals or using vital resources to meet food needs. 8.5 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger. They have large gaps between meals and are using all possible strategies to access food. 750,000 people on the brink of famine. In these areas, malnutrition is widespread and people are dying of starvation. The conflict in Sudan is creating unlivable conditions for the population, hunger being one of the most widespread. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has found that 25.6 million people across #Sudan will likely experience high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) between June and September 2024.    We must not forget that this is also a child protection crisis. When food is scarce and families are forced to flee their homes, children, especially girls, are often at greater risk of gender-based violence and being taken out of school. To save as many lives as possible, all forms of humanitarian support must be scaled up, now. And most crucially, NGOs need unimpeded humanitarian access to all communities, across all of Sudan, so that we can reach children and their families. 🚨 Urgent Call for Help 🚨 “ It takes me more than 5 hours to bring food to my family. It’s difficult and tiring but I have no other choice otherwise we don’t eat  ,” confides Mohammad, 11 years old. His story mirrors that of 2.2 million Gazans facing hunger. For nearly six months, Gaza has been devastated by airstrikes and hunger, pushing it toward famine. Parents skip meals so their children can eat, but many still go hungry. By March 15, 2024, 677,000 faced severe food insecurity. Without urgent intervention, famine is imminent by May. In Rafah, over 1.5 million displaced people queue for food, while daily bombings destroy vital infrastructure. Inaccessible regions suffer acute malnutrition, with 1 in 3 children under 2 affected. UNICEF persists in issuing warnings, yet obstacles hinder the delivery of aid. During the brutal two-year conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia, we were able to support our partner organisation, the Daughters of Charity, to distribute vital food aid to 30,000 internally displaced people sheltering in camps across the capital city. Despite relative peace, food insecurity continues to cause intense suffering across the region, with climate change causing failed harvests, population displacement and strain on resources. The right to food is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa under Section 27 (1) (b), which states that "everyone has the right to have access to sufficient food and water". Yet, on World Hunger Day, we confront the harsh reality of hunger in South Africa. In 2021, 2.1 million households (11.6%) faced hunger. Heartbreakingly, over half a million of these households include children under five. This is an urgent humanitarian crisis demanding our immediate attention and action.
