Today is #NationalPhilanthropyDay and a new report from Independent Sector found a 1.7% decline in total giving and a 10% decline in the number of donors to nonprofits in the U.S. Philanthropy includes giving of your time, talent and resources in a multitude of ways, and while donations are crucial, there are so many ways to support nonprofits. Don’t let donations be the end of your #philanthropic support. If you can’t give, or give as much, we encourage you to find other ways to use your voice, offer pro bono services, #volunteer, or more. Jewish New Yorkers are leading the way in #CharitableGiving to Jewish causes, according to a recent study by UJA-Federation of New York. Among households that made donations, nearly 70% contributed to Jewish organizations and initiatives, at least in part. This level of support for #JewishPhilanthropy surpasses the national trend. The 2020 Pew Study found that only 48% of Jewish adults across the United States donated to a Jewish cause within the past year. “Giving while living” was pioneered by Chuck Feeney, who passed away in 2023. This idea advocates for wealthy individuals to donate a significant portion of their fortune during their lifetimes, rather than leaving these donations as a legacy after death. In our work advising philanthropists, we are increasingly seeing a trend where people choose not to establish a foundation in perpetuity and opt to “not leave much to the kids.” Given the immense challenges humanity faces, we certainly welcome and encourage this trend. With collaborative philanthropy, we can make a difference now and for generations to come.
